San Josef Bay Tour
Overview
Without a doubt, one of the most amazing things to see at San Josef Bay are the sea stacks. The sea stacks at San Josef Bay are some of the only ocean-eroded stacks on Vancouver Island, and are certainly the most extreme. Water surging through the sandy passages at high tide has slowly eroded the softer rock, leaving behind only the harder formations. In some spots, this effect has left behind the sea stacks, a remarkable feature, but one found fairly commonly around the world.

After leaving Port Hardy we will travel active logging roads and pass through the historic town of Holberg.
While aboard our comfortable 15 passenger van there is a good chance of Black Bear, Roosevelt Elk or other wildlife sightings. After making a quick stop at the Scarlet Ibis Pub guests can access washrooms and take a photo opportunity or catch some fresh air. We will continue approximately 30 minutes down the road past Holberg to the Cape Scott Provincial Park trail-head. From here we will walk approximately 45 minutes on a well-maintained trail that winds through old-growth stands of Western Red Cedar and Sitka Spruce. There is an outhouse at the trail head near the beach. Guests will be encouraged to stroll the magnificent beach and comb the shores or tide pools leading to the epic Sea Stacks that have been carved into the landscape!

The rainforest hike is gorgeous and an easy hike as well. Seeing the bay and the sea stacks was very cool too, as well as checking out the intertidal life. Lunch was great in our cave on the beach and nice to meet Pat along the way in Holberg. We’d happily do it all again!Fabulous tour of San Josef Bay with Brookes & Rob. Very knowledgeable & engaging. San Josef Bay is absolutely beautiful & a true gem here in B.C. I am hesitant to tell everyone about it so it remains pristine and we keep this breathtaking spot to ourselves.

The tour was well worth it and definitely the highlight of our stay on Vancouver Island.

My wife and I joined tour owner Chris and a few other guests for this tour. It was a fantastic day - the walk to the beach was through a lovely forest and the beach itself and sea stacks were great to walk around. Chris is an excellent tour guide - he knows and has researched the area and was able to tell us all about it and some of the eccentric people there while we drove the logging road (and it's much better he drove it than me) and he also has a really nice way of engaging with all the guests. Highly worthwhile trip while in Port Hardy. This was a great tour, nothing to worry about at all from the time you get in the van until you return. This was a great tour, nothing to worry about at all from the time you get in the van until you return. Chris did an excellent job conducting the tour, pointed out lots of highlights and I had plenty of time to explore the area and grab some pictures. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone. The hike to the beach is very easy and it passes through some awesome woods. Got to even see a bear on the opposite side of the river snacking on berries. After 4 days of rain in Tofino, we went north and Chris took us out to San Josef Bay. After 4 days of rain in Tofino, we went north and Chris took us out to San Josef Bay. It's such a beautiful beach, and there are some interesting things to see on the way and once you get to the beach itself. We saw lots of mushrooms (Sept) and had a great time looking at the tidal pools. The sea stacks and lava formations are very impressive. Definitely worth the trip up to the north part of the island for a quieter, less touristy Van Island experience. Chris is well-informed on the logging and mining history of the area, and had some good suggestions on other things to do in the area. I'm so glad that we didn't drive the road ourselves. Having a knowledgeable guide was well worth it both in terms of safety and the learning experience.
