Stop At: Medina of Marrakesh, Derb Fhal Zefriti n06 Derb Fhal Zefriti, Marrakech 40000 Morocco
Marrakech's medina is about as close to an Indiana Jones movie as you can get. It's a maze of smoky street side grills and snake charmers, Berber carpets and calls to prayer, swaying palms and Arabic coffee houses.
But it's the food that makes this city so special. Forget soggy *sfenj* and mediocre tagines. Over four hours you'll dig deep into this culinary powerhouse. Expect trays of sardines crackling with cumin in a wood-fired bakehouse, simmered escargot in ras el hanout, smoky chicken skewers sizzling over charcoal, soothing bowls of harira with sweet-caramel dates, slow-cooked rabbit tagine and many more surprises.
It's more than that though. It's a crash course in the culture behind the food, the answer to all those culinary questions: Why is bread so sacred? What is argan oil? Why do dates get served in odd numbers? And is the Djemaa el-Fnaa really worth eating in?
This is four hours of eating you don't want to miss out on.
Duration: 4 hours

The tour took us right through the medina with many stops along the way to sample food and observe various artisans at work. Visited places we would not have ventured to otherwise, agree with other reviewers go hungry!

This food tour was the highlight of our experience in Marrakech! We started the tour in the old local streets seeing where the locals go food shopping and experienced many different types of food, we then moved through the secret paths of the old city with many local gems along the way. We finished in the main square with our fire cooked tagine we had helped make in the beginning! Highly recommend! We've done food tours all around the world. This was the best. We've done food tours all around the world. This was the best. Not only did Rachid introduce use to his country's heritage through its cuisine (which was delicious!) but the experiences we had were fantastic! We loved going into the communal bakery to bake bread and helping make the speciality desserts. And we very much enjoyed Rachid's view of his country and its history. Thank you, Rachid! Our tour with Rashid was amazing: the Medina/old markets are truly best navigated with a guide as it takes all the stress out of getting lost or harassed, and eating safely. Our tour with Rashid was amazing: the Medina/old markets are truly best navigated with a guide as it takes all the stress out of getting lost or harassed, and eating safely. This is an extremely immersive tour, and it's one of the most original and interactive ones as well for a number of reasons that we won't spoil for surprises. Rest assured it will be different than most others, and in a great way. Rashid is extremely knowledgable and friendly and generous with his time--we had a blast and highly recommend it.Undoubtedly the best food tour we have ever done, in fact it’s way more than just a food tour, it’s a cultural exploration. Undoubtedly the best food tour we have ever done, in fact it’s way more than just a food tour, it’s a cultural exploration. You get to see and be involved in the making of many of the foods you try and visit some places that you just wouldn’t be able to without this tour. Rachid the guide was an incredible host and a fun guy to spend the afternoon with. We would absolutely recommend this to anyone who is visiting Marrakech. We also did this with our 1 year old daughter who was really well looked after and welcome on the tour. Oh and I almost forgot to mention, there is a huge amount of delicious food to try as well as a wide range of stuff so definitely go hungry and do try to pace yourself as you go. Amazing amazing experience.Rachid brought me to most of the places that you won't find by yourself, introducing me to the food that local eats. Rachid brought me to most of the places that you won't find by yourself, introducing me to the food that local eats. I really appreciated the local part of the tour and the preparation of my own tanjia (this is a really nice idea!). Of course you'll need a big appetite, you're going to eat a lot of food. Leave some space for the final tanjia that will be ready before the tour ends. One really good point is that the tour can be personalized: just tell what you would or wouldn't like and Rachid will do his best to accommodate you. Thank you Rachid :)
