Townships where or are still referred to as locations or lokasies in Afrikaans and also called “Kasie” in slang, which is a short version of “lokasie”.
Townships have large informal settlements sprouting up in unexpected areas. Despite all this, townships in South Africa are known to be very vibrant, steeped in history with a strong sense of togetherness and a great sense of belonging, community and cohesion.

Reading about the townships in South Africa is one and visiting is totally different. On our visit of Langa we were brought face to face with township life. It was a great experience as it involved party driving with most of it covered on foot. The interaction we had was totally amazing as we were taken around by a Xhosa tourist guide Zamile who grew up in the township. He took us to the first township hostels and we had an opportunity to interact with the locals. This was a well planned tour by Raw Tours. We also visited an African witchdoctor which was quiet fascinating Lots of history and culture to learn. Highly recommend.A dive into local culture, guide knowledge and township food with deep cultural music provides an unmatched opportunity to being South africanised
