La Chorrera Waterfall - Unique countryside experience close to Bogotá
Overview
90 minutes drive from Bogotá, La Chorrera waterfall at 590 meters is the highest in Colombia. Despite this fact, not very many people know of its existence – it’s another hidden gem. The site can be accessed by crossing the 3400-meter high mountains around Bogotá.
The scenery leading up to the waterfall is wonderful, green, with lots of fresh air. The hike itself is not the easiest, there and back it takes around 3 hours. But the view and the scenery makes it very much worth your while!
There’s also a smaller waterfall at the beginning of the hike, El Chiflon, of which you can even go behind – it provides an incredible experience for hikers. On the way to La Chorrera waterfall you go through a fantastic ‘fog forest’ that is surrounded by local farms and diverse local vegetation (bromeliads, orchids, etc.). You can get refreshing drinks and food from local farmers (freshly made stuffed arepas and empanadas).

Thanks Sergio for letting me have such an amazing experience! The ride from Bogotá to the starting point of the walk/hike is around 1:20 hrs. For people with a medium fitness level it is absolutely no problem to go on this hike. We walked through the rain forest and the foggy forest, visited La Chorrera and the smaller waterfall with enough time for little breaks to take fotos and enjoy the landscape and nature. On the way back we had dinner at a very small Cuban restaurant, that was amazing. My guide Sergio picked me up around midday, which was a wonderful idea, as we were able to appreciate the sunset over the mountains during dinner. I can highly recommend this trip! This was easily our favourite tour during the time we spent in Bogota. This was easily our favourite tour during the time we spent in Bogota. Our tour guide, Sergio, first communicated with us via WhatsApp to arrange a time and pick up at our hotel, and he arrived on time to pick us up for our private tour. He was a very friendly and welcoming tour guide and his English was fantastic. It was very easy and comfortable to communicate with him throughout the day. Sergio was am AMAZING tour guide. He is very passionate about his country and he was extremely knowledgable about the history and culture of Colombia. We had many interesting conversations with him and learned so much during our tour. The hike was moderately difficult at times and Sergio moved at whatever pace we wanted. We finished the hike with an enjoyable lunch at a Cuban restaurant before heading back to town. After the tour, Sergio continued to communicate with us on WhatsApp and sent us some information on topics that we had been interested in during our discussions. In summary, we LOVED this tour and we look forward to coming back and doing more tours with Sergio in the future! Thank you for a great experience :) Chelsea & MikeA very good way to spend your time away from crowded Bogota. Personally, I highly recommend it: nice views, pleasant road and a guide that can address any topic of discussion. So, thanks a lot, Sergio!

Very amazing experience, but must be in good shape - the hike is around 7-10K with lot's of altitude climbing. My Fitbit reported 150+ flights of stairs. The guide was great - a Bogota local who took me on a personal tour (only me, not a group). He picked me up at my hotel and dropped me off in the city center (La Candelaria) at my request. Had a lot of passion for Bogota and very knowledgeable. Very great experience and completely satisfied. It was a fantastic hike to the waterfall. The local lunch is also very delicious. I can fully recommend this trip.

Spectacular scenery along the drive from Bogota to the small town and then the hike to both of the falls. The hike was moderate difficulty level I would say, but well worth it for the vistas. The lunch at the Cuban restaurant at the trail exit was a fun finishing touch. Peter was an outstanding tour guide. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who wants to get out of the city and explore nearby Bogota.
