Full Day Elephant Sanctuary Tour with a Free Batu Caves Visit
Overview
Kuala Gandah Elephant conservation was established in 1989 by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. The center is a base for the Elephant Relocation Team, which began the elephant translocation programme in 1974. The only one of its kind in Malaysia, the team is dedicated to locating, subduing and then translocating problem elephants from areas where their habitats are constantly being encroached by plantations and to other suitable habitats throughout the Peninsular such as Taman Negara. Over the past 25 yrs the centre has helped prevent the further declined of the elephant population by relocating more than 300 wild elephants.

Stop At: Batu Caves, Batu Caves, Selangor
The Batu Caves in Malaysia are one of the most important Hindu religious sites outside of India and are a must-see once you tire of shopping and wandering Kuala Lumpur.
Just eight short miles north of the city, the Batu Caves are just one of the many interesting things to do around Kuala Lumpur. The caves attract around 5, 000 visitors a day who come to climb the grueling 272 steps up to the caverns.
The Batu Caves are a focal point for Hindu Malaysians, particularly during Thaipusam: they house a 113-year-old temple, along with an interesting array of Hindu artwork and shrines.
Every year during the Hindu festival of Thaipusam, the Batu Caves attract more than a million devotees and spectators. The eight-hour procession of music and ceremony leaves offerings before a giant statue of Lord Murugan, the Hindu God of War.
What to Expect at the Batu Caves
Approaching the caves, the first thing you notice is a towering golden statue of Lord Murugan. Erected in 2006, this statue is the largest in the world dedicated to the deity and stands guard to the 272 leg-burning steps that lead up to the cave entrances.

Seeing the Batu caves was lovely but the highlight was definitely seeing the elephants. You pay a little extra if you want to feed the elephants but well worth it in the end! Fitri was very knowledgeable about Malaysia and gave us some interesting facts about the royal families and politics.

Booked this up months in advance not realising it was Malaysia National Day. Pickup as bang on time however traffic was much busier than usual which meant a little rearranging (elephants first then Batu). Elephants were good, paying for the up-close session. Amazing to get so close to these creatures. The sanctuary guide was excellent, loads of info and knowledgable. Kids enjoyed and bring it up nowadays - result! Food was decent and water provided - it was hit but that’s no surprise. Batu caves next and despite time advancing, had an hour to walk around. It was busy but again being National day, not a surprise. Chatting on way back to accommodation we got some good advice on shopping locations - local knowledge! Overall a good trip.Brilliant day out! Brilliant day out! Ramzan, our driver and guide, was exceptional. From pick up at our hotel to drop off, his knowledge and info about Malaysia, Batu Caves and the elephant conservation was brilliant. Nothing was a problem, he even stopped randomly on the way back for us to try Durian - tastes better than it smells! He warned us of the monkey behaviour at Batu Caves - don’t have water bottles or plastic bags in the monkeys sight, you will lose them. The Elephant conservation park was a highlight. We took a behind the scenes educational tour (120MYR) which was amazing. Our elephant tour guide was fabulous. Got to feed and give a neck rub to the elephants. Saw 3 very large elephants have a river bath and got to meet 3 youngster which was wicked. The education around wild elephants and how they help them was exceptional. Note of help: Take cash to the elephant park. No card facilities out there. Thank you so much Ramzan for an amazing day out!Was a lovely day trip out to the Elephant Conservation Centre (our guide wanted to make it clear it's NOT a sanctuary but a conservation centre where they mange elephant/human conflicts). Was a lovely day trip out to the Elephant Conservation Centre (our guide wanted to make it clear it's NOT a sanctuary but a conservation centre where they mange elephant/human conflicts). We were picked up in a comfortable car and Amir was a friendly driver. To be honest, there's really not that much to see there. We saw and interacted with 3 adults & 3 children elephants. Just a heads up though - since the centre is free they will ask you to make a donation, so make sure you have some cash. Our driver also recommended we do the guided tour and he was good enough to co-ordinate with one of his other drivers so that we could combine with another couple and split the 120 ringgit charge with them. Again though, bring cash and be prepared for this cost. I think the guided tour was worth it as you learn a lot more than just walking around the park and you got to get up close to all the elephants. We didn't have enough cash so our driver kindly paid everything for us and he had an EFTPOS machine in his car so we could pay him back that way (& give a tip).Great communication and punctual pick up from the hotel in KL. Great communication and punctual pick up from the hotel in KL. After a very short trip we arrived at the Batu Caves. What an amazing sight. The statue of Murugan is an incredible sight to see. Then you take the trek up the 300+ steps to go and see the inside of this breath taking cave. It was wonderful. After the climb down, we went back into the car to drive to the Elephant Sanctuary which is about 1.5 hours away. The drive is beautiful and Murali the driver was giving me all kinds of information about many of the things we saw on the way. We arrived at the Sanctuary and got checked in quickly. The only thing i wished was that there were more elephants. But it was nice to see how well these rescues are treated and I loved feeding them. Then we got back in the car and drove back to the hotel. The driver once more showed me many things and even drove up to the entrance of the palace where the King lives. Overall a very good tour. I enjoyed it very much and can recommend.
