We made our resevation at our hotel concierge and the bike shop was just a two minute walk away. We hired a tandem which did prove a little difficult to ride (due to a lack of balance from my wife on the back), but all in all it was great fun. After leaving our CC details with the Bike Rental company the friendly staff got us on our way. We rode our way along Fisherman's Wharf over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. The route isn't particulalry strenous, particulalry if you stop to take photo's along the way. After lunching in Sausalito we decided to take the Ferry back to Fisheman's Wharf, taking the bike with us - this seemed to be what most people do! It was just a short ride from the Ferry teminal at Pier 39 back to the bike hire shop to return the bike. The friendly staff at the bike shop carried out a quick check on the bike upon its return which only took a few minutes. My girlfriend and I cycled from the bay city hire shop down via the cycle path, which is v well signposted by the way, to the palace of fine arts. My girlfriend and I cycled from the bay city hire shop down via the cycle path, which is v well signposted by the way, to the palace of fine arts. The guys at the shop were great and gave us a map and talked us through the route - how to get to the bridge, interesting things to see along the way and offered us cycle helmets, cycle bags for the front of our bikes and locks with which to leave the bikes if we desired to do so....i should add at this point that if you do decide to get the San Francisco C3 CityPass, which is fantastic value by the way, bay city bikes do not include your return ticket back from Sausalito....which i thought was rather sneaky as all other cycle rentals include the return ticket as standard. Having said that the C3 pass is exceptional value and once you tot up the price of admission/hire for the rest of your activities will work out to be a good saving - we certainly noticed it. We rented bikes from Bay city bikes, visited the California Academy of science and enjoyed a wonderful bay boat ride under the bridge and back again past Alcatraz island :D. If, during your rental bike ride, you have time to check out Baker beach, by all means do so as it's rugged beauty and quiet serene views of the pacific sweeping in under the majestic golden gate bridge will not disappoint.Got 2 rubbish old bikes. 1 bike's gears didn't work and the chain fell off half way over bridge so had to pay for ferry back - $12.50 x 2. Apparently should of just gone to Sausalito branch for replacement, but no one told us about this branch when renting. No one at company warned of parking in Sausalito - there's actually a page on it on the inside of the map on the bike - which I would of read if anyone had pointed it out to me. So got $25 fine. Again, apparently we should of just parked at Sausalito branch - but again no one told us about this branch when renting or obviously we would have. Awful girl checking us in who didn't give us any of these vital details. Manager's response to all these issues - not my problem, you bought through groupon so you need to contact them. Laughable. Do your self a favour and rent from Blazing Saddles - their bikes looked much better and their seats looked great, Bay City Bikes had horrible skinny racing seats that hurt straight away. AVOID at all costs.Staff gave us a video of the route before we left and a helpful map. Very accommodating and we were able to drop the bikes in late. We got a great discount with the hostel we were staying with, would recommend looking into this before booking. Great experience!

We loved our time on our Bay City Bike Rentals BUT it is not for everyone! Firstly, there are hills to navigate. So if you are not the most active person or thinking this is a leisurely peddle then be prepared! We took the bikes from the Bay/Taylor Street Cable Car Turnaround store and headed off across the bridge to Sausalito. Paths are all clearly signed and there are lots of great stops for bikes along the way. We caught the ferry back to San Fran as it was caught the trip to go one-way, with the added bonus of enjoying a ferry crossing with views of the city and the bridge. We then road back along the esplanade to return our bikes (with a stop for lunch along the way). As an active family - we had our 2 year old in a bike seat, and 4 year old on a bike connected to an adult - we had a brilliant day out. We highly recommend as long as you are prepared for a little workout!Bay city bikes (Taylor St) location is busy and chaotic. Of four bike rentals, two needed maintenance. Bay city bikes (Taylor St) location is busy and chaotic. Of four bike rentals, two needed maintenance. One needed air and we road back to fix it. The seconds seat slipped constantly and the chain fell of three times despite stopping to adjust things. These bikes were high performance which is really more gears and more money. They were only available at one location. The management response was inadequate as they just cite disclaimers that we could have called. See July 30 review for what happens when you call. The management doesn’t care about repeat business and clearly are counting on their previous reviews. If you rent with Bay City just know they are no better then the rest of the companies and not into customer service. Fleecing one tourist at a time is their game.
