It was very informative and interesting. The staff were pleasant. The tunnels lead to different areas of the headquarters. If you're very tall, you'll need to bend your head a few times while in the tunnel. It was an overall good experience.

English translations of the Japanese captions are basic and straightforward. The rooms of the tunnels themselves are well preserved. If you are into WWII history, this is a must-visit attraction. The series of underground rooms tell the story of the Japanese defense of the island, the American invasion, and the utter devastation and horror that took place. The rooms are mostly bare, so you have to imagine, but there are great signs and photos throughout describing life and death in the bunker. Most moving for me was reading the final telegram that Adm. Ota sent to his commanders: a man seeing his own mortality and taking the time to write this letter commending the efforts of all Okinawans for their sacrifice. Be warned the passages are narrow, slippery, and if you're tall you need to watch your head! Don't miss the one-room museum on the top floor as you buy your ticket. It's a good overview of the Battle of Okinawa. Also, this is not an easy place to reach by public transportation: you need to take a bus toward Oroku (best from main bus station next to Asahibashi monorail station, #55 or #98), exit at Uebaru Danchi Mae, and walk about 15 minutes uphill. Note also the bus stop in Naha heading to Oroku is not at the bus terminal, but across the street. If in doubt, there is a Tourist Info Office in the bus terminal and they can point you in the right direction.
