Very solemn location. Informative and moving. War is horrible. Peace in the world .. now more than ever. My father served in WWII on Okinawa the horrors of the war led him to becoming a pacifist.

We were on a cruise & had the day in this area & decided to see the underground headquarters. We caught a taxi & so worth the expense to visit this place and have plenty of time to see it. The entry fee was very cheap. There are taxi that comes & goes & was able to be taken back to our ship. Highly recommend to visit

Very affordable. Many signs in English. Makes you think of the horrors of war and the plight of Okinawa’s people to be drawn into conflict.

It was very informative and interesting. The staff were pleasant. The tunnels lead to different areas of the headquarters. If you're very tall, you'll need to bend your head a few times while in the tunnel. It was an overall good experience.

It was a very sobering experience. The tunnels were very interesting to see but it was also very sad to think of what they all went through. In saying that, I am glad we went to visit.

If you are interested in WWII, this is an amazing site. You really get a feel for the war's impact on the island of Okinawa. We learned so much.

I appreciated the fact that there was signage in English. It caused me confliction because I saw the awful challenge of the American forces and the despair of the Japanese forces and the civilians who sought protection from the Japanese.

An excellent place to recognize the spirit of Japan in WW II. My father's enemies are not my enemies.

I think this is a must see if you’re nearby. It’s a quick walk through, but so impactful. To be able to step foot in such a historical setting is with the visit.

Nice to know the tragic history during Battle of Okinawa. Peacetime is essential to mankind. Will visit again another time.

First, you will go through the museum part where it educates you about the war on Okinawa. Then, you will enter the tunnel which used to be the headquarters. I thought I was somewhat familiar with and understood what happened during the war. Going through the tunnel, it still gave me chill looking at the marks of grenades where officers committed suicides. There are no blood marks (that I could see), but seeing the marks on the wall really hit me hard in a different way from reading about the war. I don't think I would have experienced that any other way. If you are interested in history, I believe this place is a must visit.

I thought it was a good experience to visit in person - you really get a sense of exactly how small and cramped everything is and it was sobering to imagine the tunnels full of people. I'm not a huge history buff though so I didn't get much more out of it. It's an easy walk though and worth seeing if you're already in the area.

the location is within the Naha City limits so its accessible, for those on public transport it can get tedious and long way to reach the location. thos driving, the carpark is foc. parking is on two levels the upper level is near the entrance to the exhibition and the lower level is near the exit of the exhibition.

This should be the first place to visit when anyone visits Okinawa. It gives a good introduction and overview of the battle between allied forces and the Japanese military during WW2. There is so much history. The damage is etched into the walls by grenades when the commanding general committed suicide with his officers. You can see and touch these.

2400 bodies were recovered after the battle for Okinawa ended on June15 1945. You take 101 steps down to the underground headquarters and can access about 300m of the original 450 m of tunnels. A stark reminded of the absolute futility of war .

For those with historical interests - lots of steps for those that have a hard time with them, as it IS underground. Though there's an elevator that can take you down to the one room museum that has a fascinating variety of historical documents, medical and military items, and statistical charts. English translations of the Japanese captions are basic and straightforward. The rooms of the tunnels themselves are well preserved. Highlight of our trip.

If you are into WWII history, this is a must-visit attraction. The series of underground rooms tell the story of the Japanese defense of the island, the American invasion, and the utter devastation and horror that took place. The rooms are mostly bare, so you have to imagine, but there are great signs and photos throughout describing life and death in the bunker. Most moving for me was reading the final telegram that Adm. Ota sent to his commanders: a man seeing his own mortality and taking the time to write this letter commending the efforts of all Okinawans for their sacrifice. Be warned the passages are narrow, slippery, and if you're tall you need to watch your head! Don't miss the one-room museum on the top floor as you buy your ticket. It's a good overview of the Battle of Okinawa. Also, this is not an easy place to reach by public transportation: you need to take a bus toward Oroku (best from main bus station next to Asahibashi monorail station, #55 or #98), exit at Uebaru Danchi Mae, and walk about 15 minutes uphill. Note also the bus stop in Naha heading to Oroku is not at the bus terminal, but across the street. If in doubt, there is a Tourist Info Office in the bus terminal and they can point you in the right direction.
