We had a fabulous time exploring Egypt with our guide, Tamer, and sailing up the Nile on the lovely dahabiya cruise. My husband and I visited Karnak, the Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings, and the Temple of Edfu- just to name a few of the destinations. Tamer was organized, gave us a great tour of all the sites and answered all our questions, plus gave us plenty of free time to roam around and take all the photos. Abu and the rest of the dahabiya crew were wonderful- and gave us way too much delicious food to choose from. We comfortably shared the boat with a few other couples, and it was fun to relax on our own or chat with our new friends. Everyone really made the trip an awesome experience. We highly recommend and will absolutely be back soon! Our tip, we came at the beginning of September, so it’s still quite hot, but the sites really weren’t crowded and a few we had almost to ourselves. For us, it was a good trade-off.We were so blessed with amazing Guidance. I felt very safe and could relax and enjoy the experiences. Michael had incredible knowledge and kindness. He had an inside deep understanding of The spiritual components of the pyramids and temples. So grateful.

My experience with Journey to Egypt was excellent especially our tour guides, Salwa and George. I’ve been meaning to write this review for months and it’s taken me this long to process everything. We did the 9 day tour, flew into Cairo. My companion flew in separately and they accommodated our individual arrivals. My flight was delayed until 3am and I descended upon the hazy night skyline of Cairo with excitement. They picked up from inside the airport. Covid protocols were still heavy then and it was a mob even in the middle of the night. My guide met me after the covid checkpoint and took care of the visa process. Make sure to tell them it’s included in your tour package. They drive me to my hotel where I met with my friend. Upon waking the next morning in our hotel in Zalamek we had the most amazing breakfast buffet overlooking the Nile and then met our guide, Salwa. We went to old Cairo that day, Egyptian museum and the market. Get some Oud while you’re there. Try them all! It’s the most delicious scent. The market was packed and the shops were big enough for 3 maybe 4 people, if that. Everyone wants to be your friend and sell you something! It was kinda fun. The next day we went to the Saqqara and the pyramids. It was everything I imagined and more. It was the end of February and the temperature was in the 60’s. It was perfect. There were lots of people put trying to sell you things, too. I wish we had more time to walk around the pyramids. The area is so big and to see everything on foot would take a long time. Our itinerary was jam packed! Our drivers were on point and took us everywhere we needed to go seamlessly. The next day we flew to Luxor. The airport experience was intense. Three security check points and I felt I had the words. The same guide who picked me up from the airport took us to the airport to depart to Luxor. Luxor was a totally different vibe. The air was much cleaner and the traffic way less intense. Cairo is nonstop horns honking. We met our tour guide, George and went to Karnak temple first then to our cruise boat. Karnak was huge. It was nice to get to our boat and relax. Beds were very comfortable. Room was a little tight but opening the windows and feeling the Nile winter breeze was ethereal. We were asked if we wanted to do a hot air balloon ride the next morning. Do it! It was awesome. You have to get up at 3:45am though. Coffee is your friend. After the hot air balloon ride we went to Colossus at Menmon then Valley of the Kings, then Temple of Hapchetsut then to a alabaster factory. Beware it’s expensive. I did buy a few pieces and may have spent too much but I look at the pieces I brought back and they bring back happy memories. People live on very little there and if my purchase helps them thrive then so be it. We started sailing the next day. The boat was three stories and had a delicious buffet with healthy options. You sat at the same place every time you dined. We had an interesting experience with sailor merchants who attached themselves to the boat and tried to sell their wares. There was a group of Brazlilians on the boat and they kept trying to sell to them by shouting, “Senora!” It continued for hours and was really annoying when you were trying to rest. We didn’t have much sleep and the tour is somewhat grueling so relaxation time was cherished and with the shouting it became much and my companion shouted back at them to shut the f- up. We called management but there wasn’t much they could do. They did eventually cut the rope so the merchants would leave. Apparently though they try not to do that because they fear those merchants might get angry and try to throw bombs. It’s a very delicate situation. So bring your earplugs in case you have some merchants tied to your boat shouting, “Senora!” Mostly, the cruise experience however was really great. We sailed to Edfu and ride a horse drawn carriage to the temple which was immense! The one thing that was hard was seeing the children asking for money trying to offer you small rolls of toilet paper. FYI, not all bathrooms have toilet paper so you need to have some on hand. We then sailed to Kom Ombo and went to the crocodile museum. Then finally to Aswan. We were in the boat six days. Aswan was really beautiful. We took a small boat through the Nile to the gardens which were an island in the middle of the river. Then to the Nubian village and had a meal with a resident who made this fermented cheese served with molasses and bread and a sweet sesame curd dish. It was really good. We went to Abu Simbel the second day in Aswan. A 4am drive though the desert, watching the sunrise over the desert as we rode in the car was one of my favorite quiet moments of the trip. We stopped at a little gas station called, “The Mirage,” had a coffee and sack and met the prettiest long haired orange cat with green eyes. There are cats like to hang out at the restaurants, near the tables, exactly where you expect to find your own cat at home. They were cute and friendly. Abu Simbel was astonishing. I didn’t realize it was so close to water. It actually had been moved from its original location. It’s mind boggling to think of that feat. The temples (Ramses 2 and his wife) were stunning. All the temples really were but I think my favorite was the last one we went to the last day in Aswan- the Temple of Isis at Philae. It was morning and virtually empty, It’s on an island in the middle of the river and it too had been moved from another location where it used to be submerged halfway during certain months. After Philae, we flew back to Cairo, where we had our last half day at the airport before our flight in the middle of the night. For some reason my companion had been bumped from the flight to the next day and the hotel comped her stay and her meals. It was a Le Meridian. Very modern. I highly recommend Journey to Egypt. We were covered in every aspect and felt safe with our guides and drivers. They took good care of us. If you are thinking of going to Egypt, do it! The Grand Egyptian Museum should be opening soon and dream to go back one day to see it and some of the western desert. The Nile cruise was the highlight of our Egypt trip!
