- The Valley of the Kings, also called the Valley of the Gates of the Kings. For a period of nearly 500 years, from the 16th to 11th century BC, tombs were constructed there for the Pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom. The valley stands on the west bank of the Nile, opposite Thebes (modern Luxor), within the heart of the Theban Necropolis.

He knows his Egyptian history so well, and would look up facts and anecdotes to enhance his tours as he got to know us. My friend and teenage daughter and I really enjoyed the four day Luxor to Aswan Nile river cruise with private tour. Our guide Amr was not only extremely knowledgeable about all of the sites, he also coordinated the timing so that we arrived at the temples before the large tourist groups so we often had them to ourselves. Amr’s stories about the gods and goddesses and kings and queens of ancient Egypt made the history fun and interesting, and he took good care to make sure we saw everything we wanted to and had everything we needed to be happy and comfortable. The Nubian village and Temple at Philae were highlights. The boat was clean and the staff accommodating, though the wifi didn’t work so great.
