Stop At:
• Sombai, Wat Damnak, Siem Reap 171204 Cambodia
Sample Menu
• Lemon & Lemongrass - Inspired by a recipe common in traditional Khmer medicine, lemon being an excellent tonic while the infusion of lemongrass has proven anti-fungal.
• Ginger & Red Chili - The spiciest flavour of the range, combining 2 hot flavours that have been smoothly softened. Ideal to wake up any kind of appetite.
• Mango & Green Chili - With a high fruity tang, relatively sweet, and a pleasant spicy touch, this flavour is the women's favourite. It can be enjoyed as an apéritif
• Galangal & Tamarind - Clearly the most exotic flavours of Sombai, mixing the sweetness and acidity of the candied tamarind to the spicy aroma of the fresh galangal.
• Anise & Coffee - Expert combination of Cambodian badian (star anise) and coffee beans. Ideal as an apéritif to enjoy the natural virtues of anise and coffee.
• Banana & Cinnamon - A blend of sweet and spicy, the prevalent taste of cinnamon gives a festive touch to this flavour. Perfect to accompany a dessert.
• Coconut & Pineapple - Cambodian version of the Piña-Colada, with a sweet hint and coconut predominance. So be careful, this drink can be scrumptiously treacherous.

I had already seen the Sombai products were seen in many places, like the DFS Angkor and Phare circus prior to making a trip down to the actual Sombai Shop itself. The visit to the workshop was good, because there was in-depth explanation to how Sombai was actually being made by their retail assistant, Kim Sreng. Details to how long the different ingredients was infused for, and meeting up with their extremely talented artist who was mute, yet produced the signature hand drawn designs on the bottles and souvenirs was indeed much appreciated. The visit provided a better story line to the product, instead of just buying it off from the shelves at other tourist attractions. I tried a wide variety of liquors and alcoholic jams which Kim Sreng took time to explain the different sensory attributes to each one. Bought a number of jams, sombai and spices and Kim Sreng was very patient in wrapping all the glass bottles in paper before fitting them in the elegant woven palm leaves boxes! Walked out of the shop with a big bag of products for friends! The visit had enriched me with knowledge of the products made, and enabled me to experience the true warm hospitality of Khmer people thru Kim Sreng. He is a gem in the retail industry, and a valuable asset to the Sombai Shop!I enjoyed this experience a lot, spending a couple of hours learning about the process and then tasting the different flavours of rice wine infusions and alcoholic jams. We took ourselves to the workshop and were warmly welcomed and then given our own tour. We also met the owner and after discussing all of the tests they had to run to get the optimum receipe we began to appreciate the care and attention in producing each flavour. Each taste is unique according to the ingredients. They are all yummy. It only cost us the Tuk Tuk fare. And yes we are taking 3 hand painted bottles home as special gifts.I was here last night finishing off my last night in Siem Reap and I loved it.
