Stop At: Lamar Valley, Yellowstone National Park, WY
The Lamar Valley of Yellowstone National Park is world renowned for the wildlife that congregates here. It is often refeered to "The Serengeti of Yellowstone." The Lamar Valley is currently the best place to spot wild wolves in the United States. This is the exact location where biologists from National Park Service released the first wolf pack to walk in Yellowstone since the early 1900's. Not only can we see wolves here but we will see large bison and elk herds grazing in this famous valley.

I'll confess, I felt a little silly paying for a private tour of a place we could go ourselves for the cost of entry. But after spending a day letting Derek drive us around, I can confidently assert that it was worth every penny. First of all, letting Derek do the driving meant everyone in the family could be looking out the window at the wildlife and scenery. But as important, Derek knows the park, he knows the animals and plants so he knows where to go and where to look when you get there. With him at the helm, we saw just about everything you could possibly see in Yellowstone National Park: A grizzly bear, a wolf, big horn sheep, mountain goats, bald eagles, foxes, coyotes, elk and bison. And we saw them in their natural habitat. We saw a handful of predators and carrion-eaters sharing a bison that had unluckily fallen through the ice and died at some point during the winter. A grizzly bear picked the bones while a bald eagle waited his turn. Derek, knowing the park, explained that the grizzly bear, fresh out of hibernation, had fished the carcass from the water. And, knowing this, we waited around a little longer to actually see the bear pull a second animal from the icy water! Again, we might have seen this for free if we'd just gone to the park, but we would have missed the narrative and the explanations. That goes for everything from predator-prey population relationships to the life cycle of trees and other vegetation. Thanks to Derek, we now understand why all the animals migrate to the Northern reaches of the National Park in winter. It was a long day, but we never felt rushed. When we saw something interesting, we could take as much time as we needed to appreciate it. Derek never rushed us - in fact, he often seemed as excited by what we were seeing as we were! It turned into a long day, but even the kids were enthralled for most of it. This is an excellent way to see everything Yellowstone has to offer. Highly recommended. Our guide Andrea was an expert naturalist—(“he knows the park really well” per my 11year old). Our guide Andrea was an expert naturalist—(“he knows the park really well” per my 11year old). Highly recommend this operation for the Professional, expert naturalist guide, and the company/guide’s Communication which was great. Andrea was excellent at tailoring the experience, start time and day to our kids (who were equally interested in taking breaks to roll around in the snow and sight animals). We’ll stocked with snacks, lunch etc—key for traveling with school aged kids! Got very rare sighting of mountain lion (albeit very far off), and black bear mamma and cubs just beginning to emerge from their den. The experience with Yellowstone Adventure Tours was beyond amazing! Andrea, our guide, was passionate and knowledgeable - a true gem of a human. He shared the best of Yellowstone in all its winter wonderland glory - bison, moose, coyote, wolves, eagles and so much more! We were fortunate to be one of the first people outside of scientists to see a new wolf pack! Every detail of the tour was thoughtfully arranged and executed. Worth every penny! We had a wonderful day exploring Yellowstone wildlife. Derek’s enthusiasm for the park wildlife was infectious and all of us agreed that this was a highlight of our winter visit to the Big Sky / Yellowstone area.

We can’t say enough great things about our day in Yellowstone with Derek! The day was absolutely more than we could’ve hoped for and completely trouble free. Derek picked us up at our resort, provided us an amazing day in the park, and was able to show us a wide variety of wildlife. Not only is he well read and educated, but he is incredibly passionate about all things Yellowstone. I was so grateful to have the private tour as it allowed us to have a very personalized trip. With the vehicle stocked with binoculars and spotting scopes, Derek made sure we saw it all! We strongly recommend him and Yellowstone Adventure Tours/Montana Adventure Tours and look forward to booking with him again!Nathan made our first experience at Yellowstone one for the memory books. Nathan made our first experience at Yellowstone one for the memory books. He was on time, he knew all the answers to our questions and personalized the experience to our family. He knew where to keep us away from the crowds and out of the traffic without missing anything. Transportation was clean, roomy. He provided a delicious lunch and knew where the cleanest bathrooms were in the park. We highly recommend Yellowstone Adventures and Nathan as your guide.
