I would recommend this company to a friend 10/10. I've been on the bigger boats, but I only saw the whales from afar. I went with this company that has smaller and faster boats and the whales came close to us. I was able to see how massive these animals are. It was amazing!

The naturalist told me that the underwater cayon is super deep starting at Moss Landing, so there are more whales there. I was amazed, I had seen humpbacks, but I had never seen so many humpbacks feeding together.

We had such a fun time on this whale watching trip. The boat was surprising; I thought we would get sprayed a lot, but we were dry. So wonderful. And being right out there near whales, sea lions , neat little birds called sooty shearwaters seemingly running across the ocean was just terrific. And Mike and Mary were terrific; they obviously love what they’re doing and made it fun for all four passengers. I thought it was a great experience to be on a smaller boat. This was our second time to go out; the first time was on a big boat. The big boat was ok, but the small boat experience is definitely better. So, the boat fits 6, 4 persons in the front, 2 in the back. Big advantage is that nobody is fighting to be able to see the whales. The captain does an amazing job trying to find the spots, turning around, etc. So worth it! The captain does an amazing job trying to find the spots, turning around, etc. So worth it! The opportunity: the explanation that you normally get in the big boats is missing here, no facts about whales, area, etc. I also requested for Spanish since my parents do not speak English and it was nice, but not what expected. Lady could at least learn how to say in Spanish the basic words that you use when you go on tour... Still I think is an amazing experience since this is an area where you can see a lot of whales. Now I don’t have always go to San Diego for this heightened level of whale watching. Now I don’t have always go to San Diego for this heightened level of whale watching. This is literally a “private” whale watching trip because of the required maximum of 6 passengers. Mike and Mary cater to their guests and they love watching just as much as you. I observed the joy they share with us. Each encounter is filled with gasps, ooohs and ahhhs by everyone including them. I couldn’t wait to move back to California after grad school so that i could go on a whale watching tour like this in San Diego. But I live in the Bay Area and it’s not so convenient. Then, this company started just a few months ago and it’s just a little over an hour to get there from the Bay Area. It’s start time is at 9am which is doable for a same day excursion. We learned why Moss Landing/Monterey Bay is a special feeding ground for humpbacks and the enjoyable and friendly activities they show off to us visitors. Mike has a special talent of seeing a whale in the distance and knowing how to quickly bring his smaller, more plyable water vessel to just the right spot for when they emerge again. Time after time they popped up right where we were. Mary and Mike have many years of experience on these waters and educated me in many ways I didn’t know even though I’m a Marine biologist at heart. I can’t recommend this method of whale watching enough. You can save money going on the larger boat but you will never experience it like we did.
