Overview

There are several sites around the Middle East that claim to be "Mount Horeb" or “Mount Sinai” but no location has as much amazing evidence to back up such claims as Jebal Maqla and it's suroundings in Saudi Arabia.

We will take you to the heritage sites around Tabuk and the Red Sea, tell you what the local bedouins believe about these sites as well as the conclusions we've reached so far based on the ongoing research we and others have performed in the region.

  • 2x Dinner
  • 3x Lunch
  • Accommodation included: 3 nights
  • Entry/Admission - Wadi Tayyib Al Ism

What to expect

Itinerary

Day 1: Historical Sites Visit and Hike

Stop At: Airport, Tabuk Saudi Arabia
Pick up from Tabuk Airport
Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Haql, Haql, Tabuk Province
The Red Sea crossing point in Saudi Arabia, across from Nuwaiba Beach, attracts numerous visitors due to its historical and religious significance. We believe that this is the area where Moses and the Israelites crossed the Red Sea during the Exodus. Visitors can explore the site and witness the remnants of ancient structures and artifacts, providing a glimpse into the biblical events. Additionally, the beach itself offers stunning views of the Red Sea and its crystal-clear waters.
Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Wadi Tayyib Al Ism, Maqnah Saudi Arabia
The Elim Oasis where Moses and his people camped after leaving Mara, is located in the Wady Tayyb Ism valley in Saudi Arabia. This place is a breathtaking natural paradise surrounded by towering rock formations with several wells the government has preserved for the local bedouins to water their animals. The oasis and the valley further into the canyon are known for their lush greenery, clear blue water pools, and an abundance of date palm trees. It offers a serene and tranquil atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and exploration in the heart of the desert.
Duration: 4 hours

Meals included:

Accommodation included: Sleep in motel or local farm

Day 2: Heritage Sites Visit and Climb

Stop At: Magna Saudi Arabia
The Magna Oasis is a stunning natural oasis located in the Al Tabuk Province of Saudi Arabia, known for its lush palm trees and fresh water springs.
It is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors the opportunity to relax and unwind in its serene surroundings.
According to Islamic tradition, the Magna Oasis is believed to contain the water source where Moses struck the rock and water gushed forth.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Al Bad', Al Bad', Tabuk Province
Jethro's Tombs is a place similar to Petra in Jordan or Mada'ain Saleh in Saudi Arabia. It is believed that one of the caves is Jethro's tomb, who was the father-in-law of Moses.

Here you can also visit the well where it is believed that Moses took care of Jethro's daughters and helped them take out water for their sheep. Perhaps this is where he met his future wife, Sephora.
Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Split Rock of Horeb, 49847, Saudi Arabia
Visit and hike up to Split Rock. The story says God Moses to strike a rock and water will come out of it to quench the thirst of the people.
See ancient petroglyphs

Day 3: Heritage Sites Visit and Hike

Stop At: Jebel al Maqla 49882, Saudi Arabia
Visit Al Lawz Mountain area with its peaks, Al Lawz and Maqla. This mountain range is believed to be referred to in the Exodus Story as the old Mount Sinai and Mount Horeb Sinai Graveyard
You will see the camp where Moses and his people stayed, an altar made of rocks that were not chiseled, and the remaining of the 12 pillars Moses erected before climbing Mount Sinai. Drive further for a few kilometers and you can see an ancient graveyard, believed to be the one where 3000 people were burried after they were punished for worshiping the golden calf.

Duration: 3 hours

Stop At: Jebel al Maqla 49882, Saudi Arabia
At the bottom of the mountain, you will be able to see the Golden Calf Altar on top of which was once erected a Golden Calf (later this was burned to ashes) and then drive to a nearby site to see a second altar with stone pillars (only a few pieces are left of the initial 12 marble pillars) which Moses build before climbing up the mountain to receive the instructions to build the Tabernacle. From this altar, you can climb up to what is believed to be Elijah's cave, a hike we only advise the fit ones to do. If you want to extent your trip by a day, you can choose to climb to the cave or even to one of the black peaks of Jebel Maqla.
