Pass By: Paradise Valley, Montana
Paradise Valley is a major river valley of the Yellowstone River in southwestern Montana just north of Yellowstone National Park in Park County, Montana. The valley is flanked by the Absaroka Range on the east and the Gallatin Range on the west. Thomas Wolfe described the expansive valley as "nude spaciousness" when he drove through on a western trip.
The Yellowstone River flows through the valley and is noted for world-class fly fishing in the river and nearby spring creeks such as DePuy Spring Creek. The valley hosts other natural wonders such as several natural hot springs, including Chico Hot Springs near Emigrant, Montana, La Duke Hot Springs near Gardiner, and Hunter's Hot Springs near Livingston.
Mount Cowen is the largest peak near the valley, at 11, 212 feet (3, 417 m) in elevation. It is located in the southern portion of the valley on the eastern side of the river within the Absaroka mountain range.
Stop At: Yankee Jim Canyon, Montana
Yankee Jim Canyon is a short, narrow canyon on the Yellowstone River about 13 miles north of Yellowstone Park. The canyon has the largest rapids on the Yellowstone River outside of the Park (boating on the Yellowstone River is banned in Yellowstone Park). Yankee Jim Canyon is less than five miles long and the whitewater rapids.

Mammoth Hot Springs are a surficial expression of the deep volcanic forces at work in Yellowstone. Although these springs lie outside the caldera boundary, their energy is attributed to the same magmatic system that fuels other Yellowstone thermal areas.

Stop At: Undine Falls, Grand Loop Rd, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190
See one of the most scenic waterfalls in the north portions of Yellowstone NP. This waterfall is often frozen over in the winter providing a spectacular scene with the river still flowing behind the waterfall
Duration: 5 minutes
Stop At: Slough Creek, Yellowstone National Park, WY
This stop provides a view of the beginning of Lamar Valley with a high probability of seeing wildlife during the winter months.
Duration: 5 minutes

Yellowstone Excursions is the way to see the mountains. Although Yellowstone is closed due to rain/flooding damage, we kept our tour and asked the office if they had a "Plan B" . Joe was our driver for a group of 9 which included three generations. We went to the Montana Grizzly Encounter, then to Quake Lake, and on the Virginia City. Each place was fantastic and we got to see all the scenery, including mountain goats. The rivers were almost bursting their banks, so we experienced the power of the mountain waters!! Joe was fantastic! Even the catered lunch was scrumptious! Couldn't have asked for a better guide. YES-you can have fun , even without Yellowstone. Just ask for "Plan B" .We spent the day w/ Mimi - everything went exactly according to plan. She was knowledgeable , patient and very pleasant. We got to see lots of wildlife just as we hoped. We spent the day w/ Mimi - everything went exactly according to plan. She was knowledgeable , patient and very pleasant. We got to see lots of wildlife just as we hoped. The website should indicate the the listed itinerary was accurate in the summer (when the southern park is open) but not in the winter. We were not disappointed in not seeing Old Faithful ir other main park sites but some might.
