The walk about in Valpariaso was quite enjoyable. Guide communicated well. So while the tour started out good, it did not get better. We probably left too big a tip for the average quality of the experience.Jaime the guide was waiting for us upon leaving the ship, gave comprehensive explanations during the trip, was courteous and pleasant, as was the Juan the driver. The Veramonte winery was exquisite!

The highly personal guide was marginally proficient in English and spent 4 times as long explaining in Spanish as she did in broken English which left us wondering what we had missed. The bus driver, on the other hand, was incredibly proficient and the bus excellent. We were supposed to be delivered to our cruise ship in Valporaiso which was successful but there was some confusion about Trip Advisors instructions about delivery to “Puerto San Antonio” which made no sense to our guide or driver but the driver knew to take us to the main embarkation center where we were taken by bus to our Viking ship. The tour was supposed to include a stop at a winery on the way to Valporaiso but our guide had to change that to the return leg to Santiago because of lack of time. I think that was due to the large number of participants ( about 18) and consequent number of pickups. The tour of Valporaiso itself was wonderful despite our guide’s poor English. A downside was that part of our large group got separated and it took at least 30 minutes to find them. That worried all of us, including our guide. One of the worst things imaginable is for a part of a non-Spanish speaking group to be lost in that convoluted city. Were I in that position as a guide, I would never take a group that large in that city or else I would have insisted that every member have my cell number in case they got separated. The driver and guide put their lunch needs ahead of the passengers, wasted time at an unnecessary stop, leaving no time to take us to the vineyard at all. The driver and guide put their lunch needs ahead of the passengers, wasted time at an unnecessary stop, leaving no time to take us to the vineyard at all. I give 2 stars because the tour through Valparaiso was good, however stopping at the beach area so that the driver and guide could eat was bad. Only one famished passenger risked eating a fish filled empanada. Because it was Jan. 1st, the guide should've anticipated a large crowd. It took twice as long to park and drive out of the full parking lot than the limited time we were there. And, there was literally nothing to do there but wait to leave. The driver and guide apparently planned on not going to the vineyard as advertised as we were brought to a nearby wine seller inside a funicular. They claimed we couldn't go to the vineyard because of lack of time. Time that they had wasted! The seller gave everyone samples of several different wines, hoping to make a sell. So, we all sampled wine on empty stomachs and were not given any safe options for lunch, as it would have ruined everyone's cruise to start off with food poisoning from eating seafood that was not safely handled at the beach.Helen and Juan were excellent tour guides. Very knowledgeable, spoke English well and felt very safe. Great tour lots to see and do. Our cruise was canceled so Stamp tours offered us a different one, which really helped with the disappointment of not going on our cruise.
