This is a typical itinerary for this product
Stop At: Toyosu Market, 6-6-1, Toyosu, Koto 135-0061 Tokyo Prefecture
Toyosu Market (豊洲市場, Toyosu Shijō) opened on October 11, 2018 on the man-made island of Toyosu in the Bay of Tokyo. It took over the wholesale business from the aging Tsukiji Market and provides tourists with an opportunity to observe the market action and to dine at restaurants across its large, modern premises.
The huge wholesale market consists of three main buildings: two buildings for seafood and one for fruits and vegetables. All buildings are connected with each other and Shijo-mae Station via walkways, and tourists can enter them along dedicated routes and view the action from observation windows that look onto the auction and wholesale halls for tuna, other seafood and produce.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Tsukiji Fish Market, 4-14-2, Tsukiji, Chuo 104-0045 Tokyo Prefecture
Meet up with your guide at Tsukiji Honganji Temple, just outside the market’s main gate, in the morning. As you navigate your way through this labyrinth of all things seafood, learn from your guide about the market’s history and why many Japan’s top chefs visit here daily to pick up the freshest-quality ingredients. You never know what you might find as you stroll past the stalls of this amazing food center. You might see piles of sea urchin (uni) stacked neatly in boxes, watch as vendors carve massive Bluefin tuna or spot puffer fish floating in tanks.

The morning guided tour to Toyosu market was fantastic! The guide, Noriko, communicated very well in English and provided the insight of the tuna auction and the market that I would have missed had I done this on my own. I also requested we take time to eat a sushi breakfast at the market because I had never eaten sushi. The sushi breakfast was excellent and again the insight provided by the guide made it an even better experience. This tour was an authentic experience that made my trip to Japan complete.Great experience with Kris as guide which enhanced the tour with professional and friendly behavior. Our overall trip to Japan was an awesome experience. The adventure into the world of tuna auctions was magical. We cannot say enough about the knowledge and experience Goreilo (pronounced “Goalie”) brought to our tour. To start, Goreilo reached out six weeks before on WhatsApp to introduce himself and let us know what the tentative plan was for the day of our tour. At the time, I thought, wow it’s super early to be thinking about all these details. Two weeks later, I found out that he had put our names in the raffle for the exclusive observation area…and we got it! We were very excited as navigating the raffle system for the various tourist attractions had been very competitive and complicated. We were still almost a month out before our trip. The day before the tour, Goreilo reached out to confirm everything was in order and we were still on. He met us at our hotel before 5am and was a master at navigating the subway system to ensure we arrived on time. He provided us with so many interesting tidbits along the way while telling us the history of the fish market and its growth and transition throughout the years. When we arrived at the Toyosu Fish Market, we entered the waiting area where we received our coveted red paper ticket! As we walked through the complex to get to the viewing area we passed by the upper space where you looked down onto the auction floor. While you can certainly see what’s happening, the sound, temperature, and the smell of fresh tuna does not compare to what we were able to experience. There’s an orchestra to the way the entire place works. The auctioneer’s callouts resonate through the space like a song. You can feel the camaraderie from the people bidding and sense the friendly competition that only comes from years of working together. Goreilo pointed out to us the different colored hats that groups would wear to denote their affiliation and emphasized how there are generations of families who have participated in this process. As we were finishing up, Goreilo shared how he has done a few tours a month over the past couple years and this was his first time to be down in the desired observation area. When asked how many times had he tried before he said, “every time.” At the close of the market, we went to the Tsukiji location and explored the various vendors. We ended our tour having sushi at the famous restaurant where the owner had purchased the most expensive tuna ever sold in the world. Although the market was an awesome tour, we cannot emphasize enough how Goreilo elevated the experience by bringing his knowledge, passion, and clear dedication to ensuring his tourists have the best chance of getting the coveted red ticket. We still keep in touch to this day and he has made a lasting impression.
