Myself and my partner did the 5 day forest trek earlier this month. Tom was really helpful with organisation of the trip and as it turned out we were the only people doing the trek that day. Our guide Kham was extremely helpful and friendly with good English and along with our other local guide looked after us very well the whole time. The food they cooked us was excellent considering how deep into the jungle we were. The trek was VERY hard. Be prepared to carry a lot of water and food along with your sleeping bag and mat. Unfortunately during the first day trek my partner slipped and hurt his knee. It was clear halfway through the second day that he could not continue for the full 5 days so we diverted to the homestay early. Kham was very understanding and helped us alot with taking the weight and keeping us up to date with different options. The homestay was another once in a lifetime experience. The locals were friendly and again the food was great. Overall an extremely challenging yet rewarding experience and if you're up for the challenge I would definitely recommend.Yankee308

I´m a 58 year old guy who has done countless high alpine adventures. I wanted a change. I wrote to various Eco agencies in Laos. The response I got from The Hiker sealed the deal. Tom the manager, an elite guide himself, and humble all-around good person, said "we can take you as deep into the forest as you want to go." I pummeled him with emails about gear, customizing the route, customs & culture, etc. His patience & humor were outstanding. Upon arrival, I stopped by to let them know I was in town. From the very first second, I knew I chose right. A few guides were lounging about their office. Seriously, I was genuinely welcomed. Alone with my 2 guides for 5 days in the small steep mountainous terrain was amazing. "Air" (The Hiker) & "Boun" (Kamu Village) increased my forest skills & kept me well fed on banana tree flowers, bamboo, rattan, frogs and more. A truly wild time was had, but that is my story. I hope you can create your own. Tom & his capable team have built a solid agency providing more for trekkers than just a canned adventure. He has put together a family of keen guides who are fantastic. And when your trip is done, you stay their friend! For instance, I was sitting in the local airport waiting for my outbound flight, I heard someone call my name. I looked up, it was "Mun", a guide from The Hiker standing there. He drove out to the airport to say so long with some bamboo take-aways. Amazing! In the end, remember, it is what you, yourself, make it out to be!
