What to expect
The sunset climb is the same as the day climb, except we end by watching the sunset from high on top of the canopy. We also have head lamps that we use to do night climbing and night rappelling, after sunset. It's for sure a tad bit more adventurous than the day climbs!
We climb as a group on multiple trees, between 100 and 200 feet high on a mix of rare old-growth trees and 2nd growth trees. Depending on the group and the climbers' ability, you will ascend one to 4 trees. Climbing 20 stories up in Coastal Douglas Fir Trees offers a shocking perspective and views few have ever seen. Spectacular views of mountains, wildlife, and ocean await you at the top of the canopy.
No experience necessary must be 8 years or older.
Learn how to climb up really big trees with ascenders until you reach the branches. Then you can branch climb to the top of the canopy! The ascender technique is similar to doing squats.
Since we will be climbing at night, dress warmly and wear athletic clothes, long pants that cover ankles, and athletic shoes. It is a good idea to also wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty or damaged. All other equipment will be provided.

I hate to leave this rating because this is such a fun & cool adventure. However, there was a major flub in the experience. I very recently signed my husband & almost 10 year old son up for their birthdays, & was so incredibly excited to learn that there was an option to add on drone photography. I knew I wouldn’t be able to experience the climb myself, so the one consolation I had was knowing the drone would capture amazing shots of all perspectives of them together in the tree. My son had never experienced something like this & I couldn’t wait to view the drone photos showing his excitement & to see how far he’d climbed. All was going great, but then my husband noticed that there was no drone anywhere, so he asked the guide where it was. It turned out that the drone photographer was sick & couldn’t be there, but no one from Adventureterra had informed us. There was actually no plan to take ANY photos whatsoever, but fortunately my husband asked the guide for some. So I now have a few cell phone photos from the experience with my husband & son’s faces & some branches in the background. There’s no way to see how high they were off the ground, which of course was why the drone photography was so special & important. While it goes without saying that safety is the number one concern & I’m SO incredibly grateful that they made it up & down, I’m also completely heartbroken to have missed their experience with the absence of those photos. I had even spoken to the guide a few hours before the climb, but there was no mention of the drone photographer being sick during our conversation. If I had known that, I would have absolutely rescheduled. Further, there was no apology issued for this misstep until after I reached out to them first regarding this situation. While I was refunded for the lack of drone photography, I’m devastated that I missed out on such an amazing, bonding & special milestone in my family’s lives. Having lifelong massive anxiety, especially in terms of my child’s safety, I’d only previously allowed him to climb trees a few feet off the ground. This time I pushed myself to let him just go for it, which adds on another layer of how important this was to not miss. After such a mistake, I would have also expected them to have at least offered a discount on a future climb with them or even issued a refund on either my husband or son’s climb, but that didn’t happen. While I would not go so far as to not recommend Adventureterra or even say we won’t give them another try ourselves, I would strongly advise asking them upon arrival if the drone photographer is present. Unfortunately, I definitely do not trust that they wouldn’t drop the ball on that again.Sunset or no sunset, this is a must for anyone's bucket list! What a thrill! Sunset or no sunset, this is a must for anyone's bucket list! What a thrill! You can do this even if you've never climbed a tree before! Equipment is new, guides are very friendly and highly experienced. They are also very patient! In our case, the guide hung close by one of our group and encouraged them in such a wonderful manner that the person is still talking about the great "customer service" they got on our climb a couple of weeks ago! I'd do it again when we have guests visiting, etc.Leo provides an unforgettable Old Growth tree climbing experience that is educational, recreational and life changing. Leo provides an unforgettable Old Growth tree climbing experience that is educational, recreational and life changing. If you ever find yourself in Washington State, this unique exposure that a tiny fraction of the population gets to experience, is a must do. The smells, the views, the physical and mental exhilaration will be forever embedded in your soul. These 350-750 year old gentle giants have stood in their glory all these years enabling us to still have the opportunity to scale and admire. Thank you Leo for this breathtaking experience! My sister in laws and I decided to do this for a 50th bday celebration. My sister in laws and I decided to do this for a 50th bday celebration. This was the most amazing, unique, beautiful way to celebrate starting our 5th decade! Leo was very patient with us and did a fantastic job helping us through our climb. We felt very comfortable going at our own pace and always felt secure and safe in the equipment. The views were awe inspiring and there is no describing the feeling of sitting on a tree branch 200 feet up in the air! The tree itself is an amazing giant- and I appreciate the fact that every care is taken to preserve the tree and not stress it. I highly recommend doing a tree climb! It is an adventure few have taken, but once you have done it, you will never forget it!We did the Sunset Canopy Climb. We did the Sunset Canopy Climb. Learning the techniques and equipment on the "practice" tree was a great way to build confidence, though if there is a larger group of people it takes some time to get through everyone. The guides are very friendly and encouraging as you find yourself amidst unbelievable heights. Be sure to plan for the ferry schedule in advance. Thanks again to Leo and Brendan!
