Overview
Live a day as a researcher with the scientists of MareTerra NGO. All your curiosities about dolphins will be satisfied. Observe the researchers as they collect scientific data to study the bottlenose dolphin population of the Gulf of Alghero. Discover the stories of some of the most famous dolphins like Suzeo, Taz or Shark Junior.
During snorkelling, you'll have a guide who will take you to discover underwater life. On board, we'll tell you some curiosities about what we have seen. You will never be alone!
Our excursions are inspired by the principles of ecotourism and sustainability:
- Latest generation boat engines reduce fuel consumption and reduce the emission of noise underwater.
- HQWW certification (High Quality Whale Watching) for whale watching operators complying with the Code of Good Conduct. This serves to reduce and minimize the disturbance of cetaceans.
- Environmental education on board.
- By joining Progetto Natura, you can support MareTerra NGO and its scientific research and conservation projects.

What to expect
Itinerary
This tour is dedicated to the search for dolphins. Thanks to the presence on board of the scientist of MareTerra NGO, our chance of spotting dolphins is 80%, a very high probability for such elusive animals.
During the navigation, we'll satisfy all your curiosities about the biology and behaviour of dolphins, along with their conservation status. Once we sighted a group of dolphins, we get closer in accord with the International Code of Conduct we adopt to minimise the risk of any disturbance to dolphins and other wildlife.
We will also be able to let you listen to the dolphin sounds recorded by the scientists of MareTerra NGO on board.
Thanks to the photo-identification technique, we can recognise dolphins by their dorsal fins and we are able to tell you their names, how old they are and their health status.
During the navigation, you will admire one of the most beautiful coasts of Sardinia and the crystalline waters of the Marine Protected Area of Capo Caccia - Isola Piana. After all these emotions, discover the magnificent underwater world and its inhabitants. Do not have much experience with snorkelling? Our guides will accompany you and will give you guidance in the water. In this way, you can enjoy your safe snorkelling experience.

- In case of no sighting of the dolphins, no refund will be provided. If it is not possible to snorkel for safety reasons, the excursion will continue looking for dolphins with the cost of the ticket unchanged.
- Good sea conditions are required for this experience. In case of cancellation due to bad sea conditions, a mechanical issue or the minimum number of people missing, you can choose another date if available or a full refund. Other conditions that could occasionally lead to the cancellation are mechanical breakdowns or personnel health problems and requests for monitoring intervention for protecting cetaceans that cannot be postponed and are in conflict with the tour's date.
- The guides reserve the right to end the excursion early if it is not possible to guarantee the safety of the people on board or to respect the established program due to weather and sea conditions. The cost of the ticket could be reduced in case of early termination of the excursion.
- Suggested equipment: water, beach towel, swimsuit, sun cream, sunglasses, sunhat.
- The tour is suitable for kids from 5 years of age.
- No toilet on board.
- In case of pathology that can put your health at risk when in the water (for example asthma or angina pectoris), we ask the courtesy to be advised at the time of booking.
- Hand sanitizer available to travelers and staff
- Gear/equipment sanitized between use
- Transportation vehicles regularly sanitized
- Guides required to regularly wash hands
- Regular temperature checks for staff
- We comply with the Covid protection rules required by current regulations specific to our sector.
- This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund
- This experience requires a minimum number of travelers. If it’s canceled because the minimum isn’t met, you’ll be offered a different date/experience or a full refund
- This tour/activity will have a maximum of 12 travelers
- Confirmation will be received at time of booking

We had a wonderful time. The trip starts with a presentation about the dolphin wildlife and the work that these biologist do in order to protect the dolphin marine life in Alghero. It is a perfect start to learn about dolphins, how we can improve our actions to preserve wildlife and the problems...
We had a wonderful time. The trip starts with a presentation about the dolphin wildlife and the work that these biologist do in order to protect the dolphin marine life in Alghero. It is a perfect start to learn about dolphins, how we can improve our actions to preserve wildlife and the problems that are destroying it. We were lucky to have spotted between 15-18 dolphins that morning. The crew is always careful to not disturb the dolphins when we meet them (slowing down the motor, positioning the boat in a certain way to let the dolphins choose where they want to go) and take many pictures of them for research purpose. After this wonderful start they took us to a snorkeling spot where we snorkeled for approximately 30-40 minutes. One of the crew members was in the water with us to teach us about the wildlife underwater by showing us different animals. Once back on the boat we received another quick presentation about what we had just seen, followed by a nice cheese, charcuterie and wine lunch. I have to add that Fabio (person in charge) and his two young colleagues seem to be passionate about their job and the respect of the environment, while being friendly and open. I highly recommend this trip that is not expensive (40€/person), where you can mix a wildlife activity while respecting the nature, which I find highly important nowadays.careforourworld

Even though we didn´t meet any dolphins the boat trip and the snorkeling were a great experience for all of us, because the friendliness, passion and knowledge of the guides is overwhelming. They taught us so much about the dolphins and how they study them in order to protect these groups in the bay area of Alghero. They visualize everything they tell you in English or Italian by way of pictures, so that it is also easy even for teenage non-native speakers to follow. When snorkelling,they cautiously and gently pick up urchins and starfish and put them back in place, afterwards they show you pictures and names of the organisms and tell you some things about them. We not only enjoyed the whole trip,but were inspired to do more for the benefit of marine ecosystems and do less of what damages them. Thank you so much!MJW364
