My wife and I are avid cyclists and are always looking for new biking experiences. Typically, these are on longer trails that traverse mostly countryside. On a whim, we decided to try something different and do a city bike tour. We registered online and met our tour guide, Doug, at 10 in the morning two days later. We signed the requisite paperwork and we were off. We chose to bring our own bikes and ride those, so no comments about the bikes. So this is all about the tour and the tour guide, Doug. In short he was excellent. It was obvious that he had spent a great deal of time reading about the history of the city of St. Petersburg. We cycled around the city, mostly on sidewalks, and made stops at various points of interest. These stops were also accompanied by detailed explanations of their history and their significance to the city. Apparently, the founders of the city, as wells as early administrators, showed extreme foresight in the development of the city. For example, they declined to allow the harbor to become an industrial complex, they bought the shoreline so that it could be preserved for public use, and they zoned for parks, shops, and promenades in a way that would remind you of many European cities. We were able to ride our bikes out to the end of the St. Pete pier for a gorgeous view of the bay and the city. For lunch, we made a slight detour behind the Dali museum to edge of the USF campus to a quaint little restaurant that served excellent food. The remaining hour of the tour was spend riding through other parts of the city and viewing some of the many murals (more than 700) that exist. It was a great experience for my wife and me. I would add that my wife was a little nervous about biking in the city, but she handled it well. It helped that it was done on a Wednesday. A weekend ride might be a bit more difficult. We would like thank Doug for his encyclopedic knowledge of the city and for taking care of us as we rode. It is a trip well worth doing. My wife and I took this tour and had a great time with Doug. He is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell he is passionate about St Pete. The bikes are smooth, comfortable and easy to ride. Would highly recommend taking this tour!
