Stop At: Shirley Heights, English Harbour Antigua
The Shirley Heights Lookout was first used during the War of American Independence (1774-1783) as a signal station and lookout for approaches to English Harbour. With French Guadeloupe directly to the south, the area was well suited for keeping Antigua’s coastline safe. A sentry could spot approaching sails and spread an alarm using flags during the day and firing signal guns at night. The signal system in Antigua was one of the best in the Caribbean, and the entire island could be on alert and know where to march within 10 minutes of the first signal.
As the garrison along the Ridge grew, barracks for soldiers, water cisterns, and gun platforms were added to Shirley Heights to keep the Dockyard below safe.
Today, the Lookout is where you get THE view of English Harbour and the Dockyard.

AMAZING EXPERIENCE! Starts of with Flava picking up at the hotel in a brand new Jeep. We started the tour right away with a stop at devils Bridge. Flava jumped right in to take pictures and give us a ton of history on that site. From that moment, I knew we had the right guy and the right tour. Flava was full of knowledge and history of every stop and site we passed. Along the way we grabbed great photos of all of us and made the experience so memorable and pleasant! The donkey sanctuary was awesome. We even ended up adopting one! Lunch at the Roadhouse was amazing! We sat with Flava for lunch and swapped personal stories of each others lives and had a few good laughs over some great food and rum punch! From lunch we cruised over to the most beautiful beach on the Caribbean and got to spend sometime swimming and collecting some sweet shells to bring home. After swimming we cruised on downtown and ended at an amazing old French military base and got some sweet photos and history of the area. My man Flava was amazing and such a passionate tour guide. He made the trip for us. He treated us like family and was so warm and welcoming. I highly recommend taking the excursion and seeing the sites, but also getting to experience with one of the best locals you will meet, FLAVA!! We will definitely come back to the island just to see him again! I would give this more than five stars if I could! We had a brilliant day. The guide Sherwin collected us promptly from our resort and turned out to be the most knowledgeable tour guide and proud Antiguan. The day included picture stops at scenic view points, peppered with information about the local trees, plants, vegetation and all their properties. The Roadhouse Restaurant turned out to be an excellent choice for lunch, very hospitable and good choice of local food. We visited all the national park points of interest and finished off the day with a relaxing hour on long beach. The drinks, soft and rum punch flowed all day so we were never thirsty! Would highly recommend this tour in a brand new Jeep.
