We traveled to Mainz on Sat, Sept 2 to join our Gate 1 Tour that began in Mainz. Since our Gate 1 Tour didn’t officially begin until 6:00 PM i on Sun, Sept 3, we planned to check out what Mainz had to offer. After researching on Tripadvisor, I discovered the “Bottlestops' ' website and was excited to learn that the Rheingau Region was the wine growing area of Germany, where they produce mostly white wines. My very limited experience of drinking German wine was the “sweet” Rieslings and Gewürztraminer. While I’m not typically a white wine drinker, my preference is the dryer red wines; my husband and I decided to broaden our wine horizons. I sent an email via the website, inquiring about the tours that were available on Sun, Sept 3. I received an email, promptly, from Jerome about the “Sunday Wine Excursion in Rheingau.” I completed the booking and received my confirmation right away, along with the terms and conditions for the tour, which stated that there needs to be a minimum number of participants in order for the tour to go. Three days before our tour, Jerome sent an email advising that the minimum number of participants required was not met and that the tour would have to be canceled. However; he offered to take my husband and I anyway, on an abbreviated private tour (2 stops, instead of 3). We took him up on the offer and met him at the designated meeting point. Jerome’s tour van was beautifully comfortable and clean. He provided us with a bottle of water each and a nice snack for in between wine tastings. We enjoyed the drive through the region, while Jerome shared his knowledge about growing grapes in the region. Our first stop was Kloster Eberbach, where we learned about the connection between the church and winemaking. After a brief tour of the beautiful monastery, we were introduced to a wide range of Rieslings from the “trocken” or dry Riesling, to the sweeter Rieslings. Much to my surprise, I enjoyed the light, refreshing dry rieslings, as well as the sweeter Riesling. We ended up buying a bottle to enjoy at our hotel later. Our next stop was in the charming town of Rudesheim, where we had a unique tasting experience. We got to try wines from many wineries in the region. Jerome recommended the wines we try, based on what he learned about our wine tastes. Along with our wine tasting we had a lovely lunch of cured meats, delicious selection of cheeses and fresh bread to compliment the tastings. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Jerome, as he shared his passion and knowledge of German wine. As a result, for the reminder of our trip, I ordered “Riesling” with all of my dinners. I now have a new appreciation for German wine and wonderful memories of the beautiful Rheingau region. A trip to Mainz is NOT complete without a visit to the wine region. Do not hesitate to book your tour with Bottle Stops. Broaden your wine horizons and let Jerome share his passion for German wine with you!Our group decided to take a day trip to Mainz from Koln for some wine tasting. Our group decided to take a day trip to Mainz from Koln for some wine tasting. Jerome greeted us on time and as described from the train station parking lot. I appreciated the water and croissants he provided that morning since we needed some sustainance for a whole day of wine tasting! Jerome is the greatest safest driver in all of Mainz (or so he says 😀). His vehicle was clean and spacious which suited our group of 4. He's a plethora of knowledge. We enjoyed learning about the history of the monastery and a nice 6 wine tasting! Our next stop was a place with 50 wines (we only sampled 5) I wished I'd bought a bottle of the Queen Victoria 😕 the place had nifty machines that dispensed the wine with a token. We also ate a delicious lunch of onion soup and meat/cheese platter at the 2nd stop. The last stop was a family ran winery where we enjoyed and bought a €55 bottle of Riesling. We highly recommend Bottlestops if you're in the area! Our guide Jerome was wonderful, making sure we were comfortable and providing us with a lot of new knowledge of the region and wine. Our guide Jerome was wonderful, making sure we were comfortable and providing us with a lot of new knowledge of the region and wine. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour of the monastery and the history followed by a wine tasting. Back to the van with a snack provided, and off to our next stop. Jerome's recommendations for which of the 80 wines I might like to try were spot on, and we enjoyed a delicious lunch (the smoked trout is divine) and did I mention some great wine. After a short ferry ride, the final stop gave us a view of some different scenery and the chance to taste some different wines. It was a great day, highly recommend this tour! Our wine tour with Jerome was excellent. Jerome was knowledgeable about the local wines and history. He was very personable and easy to talk with. He made us feel extremely comfortable. The tour included a nice mix of wine tasting experiences and a fun place for lunch.

This tour is a great way to spend an afternoon. Jerome is an excellent, friendly, and knowledgeable guide. The Abbey was great and it was interesting to learn about riesling and the history of this region with wine. The wine tastings were delicious and again Jerome walked the small group through the tastings providing insight onto what we were trying. Lunch stop had excellent selections for food and a very unique wine tasting experience. It was in an old brandy factory that had been converted to 19 different rooms with different wines in each that you can choose by inserting a token and an auto dispensing unit. It is filled with art and different products for sale and of course, wine! I definitely recommend it!
