On previous trips to Milwaukee I had visited almost all the other museums and attractions in the area. Driving from South Dakota, I needed another rest stop on my route back to Chicago. A friend recommended I see the Grohmann Museum. I never heard of it! I I have toured 157 countries and every art museum within. How good could a classical German art collection be when I am a solid fan of Impressionism and a long time member of the Art Institute of Chicago? What a surprise and humbling experience. I now recognize my judgmental attitude after seeing this extraordinary collection. It opened my eyes to the importance of this type of classical art and it's unique use of light, color, and perspective that I didn't realize existed during the time period when most of these paintings were created. I learned about and gained new respect for the life and work of the people during that era.The fire in the furnaces, and other scenes from that time were memorable. I had 1 1/2 hours on my parking meter that I never expected would run out! This was a most unexpected experience.I'm not much of an art fan, but I will freely admit I found this place fascinating. The art work is impressive, but the lasting impression of how we have evolved in terms of the work we do made the visit special.

The highlight is definitely the rooftop sculpture garden, but the Grohmann Museum offers a unique insight into the way artists have depicted labour over the years. My main criticism is that it is a personal collection so the works on display reflect Mr Grohmann’s prejudices - there are few Black people and the workers are largely male. Even so, I spent two hours here and learned a lot.A true hidden gem. Beautiful rooftop garden, impressive art collection which exceeded expectations. Staff above and beyond helpful, professional and knowledgeable. Stained glass room a must see! Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area.

This was a great find! A rather large collection of really great art depicting many different types of occupations- some of which were rather unusual. The rooftop statue garden was really unique. My son and I had a good time meandering through the collection. The staff member on duty was friendly and very polite and we even got a free calendar and guide book to the collection.
