We booked the mountain trip for the last day of our stay and it was hands down the best thing we did all holiday. Our guide Paul collected us from our hotel just before 10am in a Land Rover Discovery which was air conditioned and a super comfy ride. There was also bottled watter for everyobe provided in the price. We stopped to pick up another couple on the way before heading up into the mountains. First stop was a BEAUTIFUL village up in the mountains where we had about 45 mins to look around, see the church and buy a few gifts. We then headed further up into the mountains with several stops to take photos at some breathtaking places. Paul pointed out so many things I would have overlooked; an almond tree, fresh growing herbs by the side of the road, a vulture flying high overhead. We stopped for lunch at a taverna and had the BEST food we had all holiday. It was a traditional meze with so much food it was hard to finish it all! Honestly I can't stress just how amazing the food was, definitely one of the highlights of the experience. All of this and the drinks (beer/wine) were included in the price. We then headed down the mountain to the south coast and stopped at a small town with a BEAUTIFUL beach which we stayed at for about an hour. We then headed on back to Elounda with Paul pointing out lots of things on the way and telling us stories to bring the countryside alive. Absolutely excellent trip, would highly recommend it to anyone interested in getting out and seeing more of Crete. We booked though trip advisor which gave us the option to select an English tour and give the name of our hotel which I liked. Craig from the office called us about 10 minutes after making the booking to confirm everything and give us some more info which I thought was a great touch. For my birthday, we booked with Adventure Crete's high mountain adventure. For my birthday, we booked with Adventure Crete's high mountain adventure. It more than met our expectation. Our driver Michael had excellent English and was very knowledgable about the island,s history, flora and fauna. We were picked up at our hotel and then another couple were picked up. The Landrover was very comfotable, with forward facing seats, not benches. An early stop at Kritsas for refreshment was followed by the drive into the mountains to over 3,000 ft. We saw goats and a scorpion, as well as being shown a variety of herbs growing wild. Lunch was in a small taverna with various Cretan dishes, accompanied by wine. We then travelled to the south coast where time was set by to have a swim and relax before returning through a number of villages back to the hotel. We had plenty of time for photographing the magnificent views. Overall, highly recommendedAs most of the activities around Elounda are beach-based, this was a great alternative way to spend a day of our vacation. As most of the activities around Elounda are beach-based, this was a great alternative way to spend a day of our vacation. Our tour guide Jeff was very knowledgeable and funny - he clearly loves his job! We saw a different side of Crete than we would have otherwise gotten from just staying on the coast and really enjoyed it. Guests should note that the ride gets a bit bumpy! Wear comfortable clothing and sneakers for the cave, and bring cash for some of the souvenir opportunities at some of the stops. Plan to be in the car for the majority of the day. Also note these are Land Rover vehicles that a guide drives, not four-wheelers or anything like that. This excursion was tremendous with beautiful scenery and an amazing valley carved out by millions of years. From the very professional Craig in the office to the lovely Petra our tour guide and expert driver we really enjoyed our day. Petra was right on time to greet us at our hotel and to our surprise we were the only two on this particular day. We were taken high into the mountains with spectacular views and visited Sarakina Gorge on our way down to the South Coast of Crete. Lunch was taken at a lovely Cretan Taverna. Petra was very knowledgeable and made the day with her knowledge of herbs and spices, villages etc. We would highly recommend this tour maybe made better by just having the two of us in a very comfortable Landrover Discovery.
