What to expect

Visit: Real Pirates Salem, Charlotte Forten Park, 285 Derby St #5, Salem, MA 01970, USA

Visitors tour an interactive exhibit featuring the story of real-life pirate "Black Sam" Bellamy and his fabled beloved Maria Hallett. Visitors will be able to see and touch real pirate treasure from the wreck of Bellamy's ship, the Whydah Gally. The Whydah was a slave ship-turned pirate ship which wrecked off of the Cape Cod coastline in 1717 following a violent storm. Artifacts and real treasure have been pulled from the bottom of the ocean...surrounded by sharks...following the discovery of the ship's bell in 1984 by famed underwater explorer Barry Clifford. The exhibit renews regularly with the discovery of new artifacts by onsite archaeologists which visitors can witness with their own eyes. A video, photo experience and retail gift shop round out the visit. Groups are welcome.

Fascinating! We’ll worth the trip to Salem. Great addition to this historic town. Stop at Lulu’s for coffee and a snack, before or after.

The museum was amazing. All of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable. A staff member took my party on a tour and explained everything from the size of the cannons to the preservation process.

The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about the artifacts. My friend and I stumbled across their flyer at lunch and were not disappointed. A must see if in Salem!

The museum is wonderful in every aspect. I loved how they talked about the democratic aspects of pirate ships as well as enslavement during the 18th century. It is filled with amazing artifacts and props and lighting that bring the story of Captain Bellamy, the Whydah and his crew to life! 🏴‍☠️💓

One of only two places worldwide featuring actual recovered pirate treasure. The museum director provided an excellent narrative to many of the exhibits. H...
