Unfortunately my review for Aussie Drifterz / Foaming Fury River Tubing is not a positive one. Our day began with a driver calling us to ask why we weren’t at our hotel when he came to pick us up. It wasn’t our hotel. On the way to the river our driver ran a red light on a busy intersection in a bus that could barely manage walking pace up some of the steeper hills. The size of the group we were with was difficult to manage. We had approximately 50 people of ages ranging from about 5 up to around 60. There were 5 guides managing this group. The guides were excellent in their polite manner and friendliness - this cannot be faulted, but it seemed that they were poorly trained to manage such a large group. For example, some important instruction happened atop a bridge on an active road, which could have had cars along at any time. We occupied the entire bridge. We were stood immediately above some very noisy rapids below the bridge, consequently some of the group could not hear Justin delivering his address, neither could he hear those people trying to tell him that they couldn’t hear him. Then began the walk through extremely uneven terrain, over rocks and smooth and slippery river pebbles to get to the launch spot. When we finally got into the river it was only 5 minutes or so before we stopped and got out of the water again to jump off the same bridge. Luckily no traffic crossed the bridge while were were there. We continued down the river in the tubes. This is where the trip became very unsafe. After “Dad Rapids” we were told to exit the river and walk back up towards the bridge. This was through terrain so uneven that a number of the group (between 6-8) decided that they would not tube back down the river because the walk back up was too difficult and dangerous in wet shoes. What they didn’t know was that they would not be required to walk back up again following the next tube ride down past “Dad Rapids" - but no one had told them this, so they waited for about 20 minutes not knowing what to do. Meanwhile I waited past the rapids with one of the guides. This was a treacherous spot (great fun, I might add) where the guide had to rescue a number of tubers (myself included) who spilled out of their tubes at the bottom of the rapids. But then, inexplicably, the guide left that spot and continued in his kayak downstream into calm waters. I remained at this spot below the rapids and rescued another 3 tubers who had come to grief. I waded out and grabbed them by the arm and hauled them to the shore. They were all extremely grateful. One of these tubers thought that I was a guide, asking me what she was supposed to do next. I was appalled that this responsibility was left to me - another paying customer. This needs to be addressed before they lose a client, which would no doubt shut down the whole operation. We continued downstream for another 5 minutes before walking back to the bus. We could have easily got lost on this dirt track but we decided to follow the pink ribbons in the trees, although none of the guides had told us to do this. All up we spent maybe 20 minutes actually tubing down the river. The rest of the time was spent either walking back up to a launch spot, or jumping off the road bridge. It is my personal belief that some people were either too young or too out of shape for the Grade 2 rapids we encountered, but the waivers we filled out are supposed to catch these outliers. I have nothing but praise for the guides. They were all beautiful people, but they are sadly lacking some organisational skills and the Cairns Adventure Group needs to up its game before someone dies or is injured on this trip. A footnote - This is my 3rd tubing trip with different adventure companies around the world. I love tubing and rafting. However, I will neither go on this particular trip again, nor recommend it to friends or family.Firstly all the staff are fantastic, really cheerful, full of knowledge and more than happy to help or offer advice! Firstly all the staff are fantastic, really cheerful, full of knowledge and more than happy to help or offer advice! We had a fun few hours. It was easy with 2 teenagers being able to carry their own tube as we were in and out of the water a few times. Would be harder with younger kids (but the younger ones certainly seemed to still love it). Fantastic half day activity. Was a great time totally loved it and would do it again. However, we spent 2 hours doing pick up and 2 hours drop off so a half day experience was really a2 hour ride on the water.
