Stop At: Rainforest Chocolate Tour, Road to Waterfall of La Fortuna, In Front of Cabinas La Catarata, Arenal Volcano National Park, La Fortuna de San Carlos 856-3000 Costa Rica
Considered as "a gift of the Gods", the cacao tree was very important to the ancient culture. It was not only used as a ceremonial drink, but its seeds were also used as currency because of its economic value, in many regions of Mesoamerica, including Costa Rica.
In this 2-hour “hands on” program, you'll have the opportunity to learn interesting aspects of cocoa and chocolate, from its origin and history, participating in all the production process, from the harvesting of the fruit, drying and grinding of the seed, also the developing of the traditional drink of our ancestors, and of course enjoying a high quality organic chocolate.

This was a great tour and Catherine was a super guide. We got to wander among the trees to see the cacao growing, as well as the vanilla they raise. We learned SO MUCH about the history and process of making chocolate. It was fun to help make and then partake of "the drink of the Gods" as the Incas/Aztecs did. But the most fun was getting to taste chocolate with our chosen "mix ins"! They also have some great chocolate for sale in their shop. That alone makes this tour worthwhile. But it is NOT chocolate candy you get at the end of the tour. It is even better — spoonfuls of warm melted chocolate with bit of different flavors you choose. That alone makes this tour worthwhile. But it is NOT chocolate candy you get at the end of the tour. It is even better — spoonfuls of warm melted chocolate with bit of different flavors you choose. And you can go back in line as much as you want — rum & orange; vanilla & blueberry; mint & peanuts…etc. Definitely learned a lot and think about the process with each chocolate candy I see now. Also watched toucans flittering around among the trees. And, of course, you can buy chocolate bars — including sugar-free — at the end of the tour. This tour was a very enjoyable and informative activity for our family. This tour was a very enjoyable and informative activity for our family. Our guide was very knowledgeable about cacao and chocolate, and she had a lovely personality. While the tour was definitely interesting, I wouldn't necessarily refer to it as overly fun. Based on the many reviews I had read prior to going, I must admit I was expected to be presented with a plethora of chocolate. That's not what happened-- we mostly experienced cacao beans and tasted liquid chocolate. That was cool, and tasty, but we certainly did not consume much chocolate. I was glad we did this tour because it was educational for our kids, and it was a nice break from our active excursions.Learned a lot about chocolate and had a lot of fun learning and tasting the chocolate. The guides were excellent.

Really good two-hour tour explaining the history of chocolate and how it is produced from bean to bar. The tasting sessions were particularly enjoyed by our two children. Katherine was an engaging host and knowledgeable. One point deducted for some inaccuracies in some of the information given - but this comes from someone who knows the cocoa process and chocolate industry very well. We stocked up with goodies in the shop at the end of the tour.Great fun, our guide was excellent at engaging the whole group and you get to eat a lot of chocolate.
