Had a very enlightening day today. Decided to book a private walking tour of Bayonne. Our tour guide, Juan Carlos, who finished a degree in History and lives in Bayonne, was the perfect person for the job. We admired his extensive knowledge about the city’s history and people as well as the passion with which he performs his job. The 2 hours left us with an appreciation of the city we didn’t have before the tour. I’ll forever associate Bayonne with the onion, in a very good way. Our walking tour with Juan Carlos was the highlight of our visit to Bayonne. Anyone can recites dates and read from notes. Juan Carlos obviously has studied the history of Bayonne and was able to give us colorful anecdotes and facts about many of the older buildings and the fortifications surrounding the city. He described and showed us where several of the merchant classes lived and worked and painted a clear picture of what life was like in Bayonne through out its history. We were so engaged and engrossed by his narrations none of realized we had gone almost an hour over time. Juan Carlos does tours of Biarritz, San Sebastian and other locations with Alterguiding. We highly recommend him as an expert guide.Fantastic tour. A very engaging, enjoyable, walk in which Juan Carlos gave us the benefit of his deep knowledge of the history, architecture and culture of the area. I highly recommend it as a great way to get to know Bayonne.
