We scheduled a 3 hour walking tour of Orvieto through Presto tours. Orvieto is an easy 1.5 hour train ride from Rome. From the train station in the modern part of Orvieto, you must get to the hilltop medieval town by bus, taxi or funicular. Our guide, Elisa, met us at the top of the funicular station. She began by taking us to the main gate of the town and the city walls, which provide stunning views of the Umbrian countryside. She then showed us St Patrick's Well, which we had the option to return to after the tour if we wished to climb the 12 flights of stairs to the bottom. She took us through the charming streets of Orvieto, pointing out the best shops and restaurants along the way. The highlight of the tour was the cathedral. Elisa went into detail about the history, architecture, art, politics and religious traditions. She was very knowledgeable and a very warm, animated style. Highly recommend this tour! The tour and the local guide were wonderful. She was super knowledgeable, but not boring, and showed us the church, underground, and the town. The tour and the local guide were wonderful. She was super knowledgeable, but not boring, and showed us the church, underground, and the town. Nothing negative about the tour, but a few tips about the town... #1 - The tour meeting place is uphill from the vernacular - make sure you have enough time or take the shuttle bus. #2 - The majority of the shops close between 1-4... I would peruse them first, do lunch, and then a tour. #3 - The people were not overly friendly. Only one store that I walked into acknowledged my presence. One actually looked at me, and turned and walked the other way. We stopped in the store with the Pinocchio nose chocolates after lunch, for espresso and chocolates, and they were noticeably rude to us. Very odd.
Tour guide was very knowledgeable and paced the walking tour to accommodate all our strengths and weaknesses. He did a great job inside the church and outside at the view and other historic sites.

Very nice, friendly guide with very good English. Arrived promptly at meeting point. Tour began well. Much information about the St. Patrick's well and all that area. Then we walked up the street towards the Cathedra, and some shops and architectural points of interest were pointed out along the way. At the cathedral the guide book was produced. I could have bought my own. After walking around inside, the tour was over. It was less than 2 hours. Very bad value for money and did not do justice to the beautiful city. Buy the guide book and do it yourself!
This was a great overview of Orvieto lending context to the major landmarks, history and culture. The Duomo is a marvel and Viviana brought it alive for us. She was knowledgeable, friendly, interesting and adapted well to our small group. Highly recommend!
