Itinerary
Escape the crowds of Skagway on a private photography tour in the stunning Chilkat Valley. Your expert photographer guide will assist you in capturing the best of the Chilkat Valley's unique attractions.
The trip begins with a 45-minute 100-passenger shuttle catamaran ride along the steep-walled fjord between Skagway and Haines.
Your guide has scouted out the best areas for the day's photo shoot. Since this is a private tour, you will be able to work directly with the guide to decide which locations and subject matter you want to focus on. Depending on the lighting and weather, different locations in the Chilkat Valley boast specific photographic highlights. May, June, and July feature wildflowers and bald eagles. Beginning in August, pink salmon begin their run up the Chilkoot River to spawn and brown bear often come down to the river to feed. When bears are present, every effort will be made to give you safe bear viewing and photography.
The theme is flexibility, fun and learning. A simple point and shoot camera or smartphone will work, but by all means, bring all your photo gear. You’ll return to Skagway by catamaran.

- At time of booking, please provide the name of your Cruise Ship or Hotel accommodation so we know where to meet you for the tour.
- Your tour includes a portable lunch. It consists of a turkey sandwich on organic whole wheat bread, fruit, freshly baked cookie, and bottled water. Vegetarian and gluten free options are available with 48 hours advance notice.

This is a do not miss tour. The scenery is beautiful, and the guide could not have been better. One of the real highlights of our cruise!!

This was such an enjoyable experience! We booked this excursion through TripAdvisor as a day excursion from our Royal Caribbean cruise aboard the Quantum of the Seas, May 19, 2022. We were met by our guide, Paul, at the dock in Skagway and boarded the beautiful 45 minute ferry ride to Haines. Eve...
This was such an enjoyable experience! We booked this excursion through TripAdvisor as a day excursion from our Royal Caribbean cruise aboard the Quantum of the Seas, May 19, 2022. We were met by our guide, Paul, at the dock in Skagway and boarded the beautiful 45 minute ferry ride to Haines. Even the ferry trip was a fun, picturesque experience. We then loaded the van in Haines and departed for our full day of natural beauty and photography. Paul was great and really tailored the day to us. At the beginning of the day, he asked if there was anything in particular we’d like to photograph. We replied, without high expectations, that we’d love to see brown bears, knowing that we were likely too early in the season. Paul replied, “probably not going to see bears today, but you never know”. Imagine our thrill when we saw two brown bears along the river’s edge! We were really lucky as the forecast was for chances of rain, but we had really nice weather. We saw surf scoters, brown bear, bald eagles and really stunning scenery! Great experience and would do it again in a heartbeat!Rich B

I was hoping to learn about my camera and photography as the information that I had promised - 'you don't have to know anything about your camera'. I bought my camera just for this cruise to Alaska. I was hoping to learn the proper settings of my camera for a particular shot. Luckily I went to Youtube about a week before this excursion to get some idea going in. I'm not sure how an individual gets proper instruction when there are several people on the excursion and the instructor doesn't have time to deal with folks one on one. I wrote to Joe about my experience with Dana and the information I did not receive about my camera. I gave my input on how to improve things, so now I'm leaving the review. If you're looking to learn more about your camera and proper settings for a particular shot, then this is not what you're looking for. At least that was my experience with Dana. You'd be better served by referencing Youtube. This review is based on the fact that we were told we would learn about our cameras, but did not receive that instruction.CGermain333

Rachel, our tour guide, made this tour memorable. Great photography tips and overview of the basics. She was friendly and attended to everyone needs.. We went off the usual tourist areas and I appreciated that. I would recommend that tour to everyone even if you are not a photographer!
