Join us at Glacier Encounter for a breathtaking private glacier hike on the southern coast of Iceland. Our expert guides will lead you on a three hour walking tour of Sólheimajökull glacier outlet.
On this tour you will see incredible glacier formations such as crevasses and moulins. These formations can be awe-inspiring and formidable, but our expert guides will ensure your safety and enjoyment.
We have great respect for our environment and the history of Iceland. Did you know that the glacier ice that runs down from the peak of the volcano Katla is hundreds of years old and the area around the glacier was first settled in the ninth century? Our guides love sharing their knowledge and stories, so we invite you join us to make the most of your Iceland trip.

What to expect
Conquer the glacier on our three hour long hike through Sólheimajökull Glacier.
This is a private tour so your group/family will have your own certified glacier guide for the whole trip. Our expert guides will help you gear up and brief you on safety elements. Once your group is ready we will head into the glacial valley for about 20 minutes until we find the edge of the glacier. Since this is a private tour the pace of the hike through the glacier is matched to everybody's abilities and fitness. The alien like surface of Sólheimajökull can be challenging but with our guides, this adventure will be fun and hopefully something you will never forget.
We provide all the safety gear necessary: crampons, harnesses, helmets and hiking poles.
We encourage our guests to bring worn-in hiking boots, gloves, insulating and waterproof layers. The weather is usually not working in our favour in Iceland, wind and precipitation can be expected most days.

The glacier encounter was one of the most memorable and unique experiences we have ever had, and a lot of fun. Our family ranged from ages 15 to 50 and was truly enjoyed by all. Our guide Jökull was very knowledgeable about the glacier, but being Icelandic we were also able to talk more generally about Iceland and its history. Being in a small private group, we considered that Jökull was able to help us explore more of the glacier and its features, such as the ice caves, and drinking whiskey out of a block of ice, than perhaps some of the larger companies operating in bigger groups. We are so pleased that we chose to do the tour and would highly recommend Glacier Encounter for such an amazing experience. At first, they provided all necessary gear (e.g. hiking boots, gloves, crampons, etc.) with no extra charges, they were in good conditions that gives us confidence about the hike on a rainy day. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and taken very good care on each one of us. They are willing to bring us exploring different areas of the glacier (instead of just following the crowd), so that we can take good pictures of the glacier. They even surprised us by building stairs on the spot, and letting us to go inside an ice canyon. Overall, the tour lasted for more than 4 hours, it is really an amazing experience.Our tour with Lucas was amazing, the highlight of our 10 days in Iceland. being in a private group meant that we got to see and do so much more than the large groups we saw on the ice.
