After 3 hours hiking accomanied by your tour guide, you will reach to Mutianyu Great Wall, the longest fully-restored section open to tourists. As one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall, Mutianyu section used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs.
After a long hiking, you can choose to take a cable car down or slid down by toboggan (at your own expense). Or simply walk down.

I'd give this 6 stars if I could. Amazing experience. Our guide Jerry was the best. The time you get on the wall is fascinating and so amazingly private. I really couldn't imagine going back and doing it more traditionally bus to a cable car to the wall. This experience just felt so authentic and was so meaningful.
That said, parts of this hike are strenuous. You start by hiking up a mountain for an hour. It's difficult enough that the driver stays put and calls the guide to make sure the guests are gonna make it. But then after that hour, ti's pretty easy going. Finally there is a bit of a tough decent at the end that keeps your knees under tension for a while. Probably if you balance the hard and the easy you get a moderately difficult activity, but the hard parts are pretty hard.
An amazing experience though. Worth losing some weight and getting in shape for it. It was so authentic....six stars. And tip your guide cause he does the hike too. Never seen a guide work so hard.

Just an awesome way to experience the Wall in its unrestored state with hardly anyone else around. The transportation was first rate. My guide was friendly and courteous. The drop-off is at a small village and the hike begins. The hike is a fairly strenuous mountian climb up, perfect to experience the local forest and get "leg day" done. The climb comes to the Wall at a watchtower, requiring a short improvised ladder to enter. Then just meandering on top of the wall, by yourself (came across only 3 other people on this part of the tour), is just magical. Even though, being unrestored, it is perhaps not as photogenic as the restored sections, the lack of other people and the silence and seeing nature slowly reclaim things allowed my imagination to concentrate on what life would have been like back then. There is just enough danger on the hike up and wandering to make it feel like a true adventure. My only disappointment was that the hike up and along the unrestored section ended too early, I could have done that all day. The last part of the wall is along a "tourist" section, restored, and finishes with either a cable car or walk down (client choice). After the hike lunch at a very nice restaurant was provided. Expect about 4 hours of hiking depending on pace, 3 1/2 hours of driving, and an hour for lunch. Definitely recommend for those in the mood for a difficult climb rewarded by have a good section of the Wall to yourself. This was an amazing experience. The guide (Jenny) was very friendly and open. The views of unrestored part of Great Wall are awesome. A must see tour/experience if you are in Beijing and want to see the real Great Wall as it is!

Great Wall, whichever part you wanted to visit he is the man to go to. We chose to take the cable car up and down and walk the Wall from Mutianyu to Jiankou - it was unbelievable, words just can't express how amazing the whole experience was. The views, the feel of the history in every step and stone. We didn't want to leave, it was so magnificent. We would highly recommend Jonny for whatever part of the wall you want to visit, the difficult for the very fit, or the more gentle parts for the not so fit. He does overnight camping on the wall, whatever you choose to do you will enjoy. We did this day trip with our 8-year old son and he hiked this section no problem. We did this day trip with our 8-year old son and he hiked this section no problem. Our guide Dennis and his driver picked us up at our hotel in a new minivan. It was a private tour for just our family. Dennis gave us great history all the way to the Wall. He spoke excellent English and gave very clear expectations. There was never any up-selling or awkward moments that sometimes accompany a tour. Everything was very easy and professional with this company. I highly recommend! Dennis was superb. This is a fair bit of hiking - much of it uphill. If you are in bad shape, it will hurt but it's doable. If you are in moderate shape, you'll be sore in the calf muscles. If you are in great shape, it's a breeze. This is a WAY better option than just going to see the wall on a bus. Hiking along the unrestored section toward Mutianyu gave us time to marvel at the vastness of the wall and the surrounding mountains. Must Do's: - Take the toboggan down. - Eat at the local chain dumpling restaurant at the bottom of the wall in Mutianyu. - Go in mid-October (before the leaves drop off) to miss the big crowds.
