Private Food/Wine Tour Porto
Overview
In this private food/wine tour we will focus on Portuguese gastronomy, but you will learn a lot about our culture, history and traditions, which makes us unique.
You will visit the temporary Bolhão market and several food spots and tascas (traditional stores), while getting in contact with the locals. Meanwhile, discover the stories behind our main dishes: the legend of the "tripeiros", name given to the porto inhabitants; you will learn how "francesinha" is made, that "caloric bomb" that you should not miss and the tasty codfish recipes, so important in our culture.
We will harmonize it with our portuguese wines and explain the diverse grapes and wine regions. And what about our cakes, like pastel de nata or jesuíta, ...?

Sara customized our tour to allow for half walking and half driving. It has not rained much in Porto but we happened to hit it on a day it did not stop drizzling. Nevertheless, Sara took us through the streets of Porto regaling us with stories and history. Everywhere we stopped we were greeted with a smile and something to eat and drink. From the market and green wine with sardines (canned this time of year), to the francesinha (little french woman) we covered the highlights of the city. Sara keeps everything light and entertaining. The time passed all too quickly but it was delightful.

Sara our guide met us at the Sao Bento train station. She eagerly introduced herself and asked if we were familiar with the history of Porto and the train station. As we were not, she began explaining the history and the stories behind the wall tiles, which are very important in Porto. From the train station we began our walk, with the first stop being a coffee shop for lunch, where my travel companion was offered a Pork sandwich while I a nonmeat eater had a lovely salad. From the coffee shop we continued walking and eating, stopping at a cheese store, a bread shop, a wine store with another stop for some port. Our next stop was an traditional market where we sampled olives and nuts. By then we were satiated yet had more stops- Pastel de Nata a traditional dessert and coffee and an olive oil tasting. We thought this would be the standard 3 hour tour. Before we knew over 4 hours had passed and Sara was putting us in a cab with a doggie bag so we could continue feasting at our hotel.
Not only does Sara offer a fabulous Food Tour, she also offers wine tours and day tours in and around Porto. Having been on several food tours in other European cities, I must say that Sara's tour was extremely comprehensive and throughly enjoyable!
