Pha That Luang is a large Buddhist stupa in Vientiane built in the 16th century. According to legend, a Mon sanctuary was originally located here. Other legends say that emissaries of King Ashoka brought a relic of the Buddha here in about 307 BC.

Patuxai is a triumphal arch in the Laotian capital Vientiane. The 49-meter high monumental structure stands at the end of the Xang boulevard. Patuxai was built in the 1960s as a "monument to the heroes of the royal army", i.e. for Laos' independence from France.
