The name of the mountain came from one of the citadels built by the Hungarian Kingdom, as a custom, control and protection point, at the southern border of Transylvania, at the bottom of the mountains, at the end of XIV century. The name of the citadel in German language was Königstein.
The locals called the mountain The Stone (Piatra).

This hiking trip is a great opportunity to explore Piatra Craiului National Park in the Carpathian Mountains, an area pretty much untouched by the 21st century. Trek past gorges, forests and pastures where mountain shepherds still work, and see a side of Romania that's hardly changed in generations.

My boyfriend and I went on a hike in Piatra Craiului National Park. We hiked to Cabana Curmatura and then we headed to Piatra Mica. Our guide was Bogdan, who was very friendly, knowledgeable and attentive and guided us through the trickiest parts of the walk. The scenery is absolutely spectacular. We both found the route really enjoyable as it had a mixture of easy scenic walking and with some more challenging sections near the top. We really enjoyed the meal at Cabana Curmatura and some delicious apple cake. We’ll definitely do another hike with Bogdan!First time hiking in winter for me and the family, including grandma and we loved it🥰. We had a nice stop at the chalet and eat something and then Mihai changed the plan and we conquered the Piatra Mica and this was an amazing hike. We took a private one day tour with Marian at Piatra Craiului National Park. We couldn't have asked for a better guide neither a better way to spend our Sunday. The hike is of easy to medium difficulty so a certain level of fitness is recommended, but Marian made sure to adjust the route and pace to our level. He was very knowledgeable, told us a lot of folklore stories about the mountain, a lot of historical facts about Romania and he was a delight to be with. The stop at the mountain lodge was very pleasurable. We also got a bonus visit too the Rasnov citadel as well. Don't miss this tour when you're in Brasov!
