The sunset was dreamy; if I squinted a little, in my mind’s eye, I saw the camel caravans of old setting up camp for the night. We met Bhawani in his art gallery close to the entrance gate to the Fort in Jaisalmer. Although I have lived in India for 26 years, I was travelling with friends who did want to buy souvenirs. Bhawani quoted us a reasonable price on a beautiful bedspread which my friend purchased after scouring all the other textile shops in the fort. He offered to take us into the desert for dinner, having done this before I was not that keen as it was quite touristic and we all ended up on the same dune a few kilometres outside Jaisalmer. However, Bhawani offered us something different as he has recently purchased his own jeep so took us literally off the beaten track about an hour’s ride into the Thar Desert. We were a group of 4 friends so our tour went at our own pace and none of us were interested in riding camels! Bhawani used local villagers to cook a simple but tasty Indian vegetarian meal washed down with some very welcome ice-cold beers and we lay back and looked at the stars that were amazing with no light pollution. Bhawani was great fun, engaged and informative and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience which was excellent value for money shared between 4.We did a camel desert safari and it was one of the best experiences ever! After a short Jeep ride, we went on the camels to a spot in the desert where we enjoyed a freshly cooked yummy dinner and slept under an open sky! I would recommend this to everyone who is open for an awesome adventure!
