So once upon a time about a year ago to the date, I took my first trip to Medellin with the intent of experiencing something new and exciting. I had met an individual that referenced me to Lina and Alex of Medellin Travels and said that if there was ANYTHING that I wanted to see, they were the f...
So once upon a time about a year ago to the date, I took my first trip to Medellin with the intent of experiencing something new and exciting. I had met an individual that referenced me to Lina and Alex of Medellin Travels and said that if there was ANYTHING that I wanted to see, they were the folks to talk to. Long story short, on that trip with the coordination through Lina, and the professional guidance of Alex, I was able to experience two of their tours (the Rio Claro, and Medellin City Tours) and I managed to fall in love the with the area. Fast forward a year to the now... I've been spending the last year thinking about how and when I should go back and take on the city again. So April of 2018 I locked in my dates and the first thing I did was start coordinating with Alex the available times he had. I seeked his advice on what tours I should take while there. Some quick responses back and I locked in the Pablo Tour (with La Catedral) and El Penol/Guatape. The Pablo tour is a must do tour for those of you who want to know the real story behind the man with such a history and influence on this city. Alex is well versed in the real stories of what went on based on his experiences living in Medellin, and not some Hollywood influenced screen writer. Along with the stories and history of it all, know that he speaks with honesty (this is by far some glorification tour that you might get elsewhere). You get to experience some of the sites of key events that happened along the way to paint a better picture. Such a powerful tour to those with inquiring minds! As for El Penol/Guatape... Be prepared to hike and see one of the best views you'll ever encounter. I really wish I had my photos uploaded from my trip and I hope Trip Advisor allows me to post them to this review at a later time. But this is a trip to the photography nuts out there, just be prepared with a good day pack for your equipment, some hiking shoes, shorts and a mind ready to take it all in. Absolutely worth it! The town of Guatape a short drive away from the rock also provides some picturesque opportunities throughout. Some super vivid coloring and winding roads to capture the eye. My advice would be to absolutely give Medellin Travels a chance if you have an inquisitive mind and want to explore! Their team takes a ton of pride in their work as well as their city/country, and it shows. I can't wait until I can lock in a third trip out there and see what I can get into next. Oscar was a great and very knowledgeable tour guide. He is a native from Medellin and speaks fluently Spanish and English. He also takes his time with explanations and does not leave you without all the information. We first booked for the Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Tour with La Catedral Jail before arriving in Medellin. We were picked up right on time at 9am at our hotel and as Oscar was driving us from point to point he enlightened us with the story of Pablo as well as when we were at the sites. If you watched Narcos he will also explain what was false or information switched around. This tour went amazing that we ended up booking the Comuna 13 and cable metro tour for the next day. Comuna 13 and the Cable Metro were two once in a lifetime opportunities. Comuna 13 is filled with beautiful graffiti from local artists and since it’s built on a hill they have escalators in the middle of the neighborhood to bring you to the top. During the guided tour Oscar explained the events that occurred in this neighborhood and why it’s a symbol of Medellin. The cable metro was very interesting to see that people use it daily. It’s such a great view of Medellin and Oscar explains each of the areas as we are going by. We mentioned that we were going to the Museo de Antioquia and Oscar took his time out to explain information about Fernando Botero and what to expect as we walked through this museum and this made it more enjoyable for us. As a fan of Narcos, this was a must. My guide Lina was very nice, spoke perfect English, was a great driver and had a nice car. It was very interesting to get a local perspective on the events and see the real sites, including the impressive (and rather provocative) family grave.
