Stop At: Jerash Ruins, Jerash Jordan
You will be picked up from your hotel in the Dead Sea to start your tour by visiting Jerash city, the most complete and well-preserved city of the Roman Empire. Jerash is one of the Decapolis cities to the north of Amman. You will enter through the main gate of the city and visit its Oval Plaza, Colonnaded Street as well as its theaters, and temples.
Duration: 3 hours
Stop At: Ajlun Castle (Qala'at ar-Rabad), Ajlun Jordan
On the road, you will see the Jordan valley, Jordan River and the old olive oil trees that are one hundred years old. You will then travel to Ajlon to visit the Medieval Castle of Ajlun built by the Muslims during the 12th Century in the time of Saladin for defensive purposes during the crusaders. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and green north fields from its unique towers. There are two theories for the name of Ajlun either (iron) as there was iron material in the area or because it was built on top of a monastery after the priest's name. This city is located in the northwest of Jordan, Ajlun is a series of high mountains, in the Omayyad period it was named Gilad which means hardness or roughness.
At the end of the journey, you will then be returned to your hotel in the Dead Sea.
Duration: 1 hour

The driver, Mohammad, picked me up on time from my hotel at the Dead Sea. We didn't take the expected route as it was somewhat of a rainy day and apparently the original route would have been affected by rain. So we went via Amman. On the way there we talked about my stay so far and the things I had seen. He suggested we could add Amman sights to the trip for an extra fee. I pretty was sceptical at first but the fee was comparatively small and it did indeed pay off to add Amman to the programme. We stopped by the common sights, the King Abdullah I Mosque, the Amman Citadel and the Roman Theatre. We even had some typically Ammani snack along the way. I believe it was called Kunafa - some sort of goat cheese with caramel. After that we went to Jerash and Ajloun. Jerash is definitely worth seeing. I was surprised to learn how big it actually was. It did take some time to see all the sights. Prepare to walk a lot here. Then we went to Ajloun which I found less impressive than Jerash but still nice enough to visit. If you have seen a few castles in your life, this is simply "yet another one". After Ajloun, we drove back to the hotel, had a shawarma along the way and a little photo session at a water dam. To me, what made this trip actually worthwhile were the "little things". I really appreciated how we stopped for water and coffee along the way multiple times between the different sights. We even had figs from some street seller near Ajloun. The driver told me all kinds of things about Jordan which I found really interesting to hear. He was genuinely making an effort to turn the trip into an experience. If you want a driver that does more than simply drop you off at the sights, Mohammad is your guy. The only real downside of the trip (and primary reason for the 4 stars instead of 5) is that you kind of have to go through souvenir stores and people really try hard to sell stuff to you. I always made it clear that I wasn't interested but they still tried and looked at me as if I had killed their cat after declining their offers multiple times. I know that this is common in Jordan (and other Arab countries) but I still found it annoying and somewhat off-putting. Overall, I can recommend the trip. Just be sure you bring enough cash. Credit cards aren't really accepted anywhere.rode2411
