What to expect
Opened during the Lisbon World Exposition of 1998, the Oceanario is a top attraction. With over 1 million annual visitors, it offers an enchanting glimpse into the underwater world. Explore 8, 000 sea creatures from 500 species, including penguins, otters, sharks, and corals. The main exhibit features a 5-million-liter saltwater aquarium, surrounded by habitats representing the North Atlantic, Antarctic, Temperate Pacific, and Tropical Indian Ocean. The journey unfolds on two levels, crossing temperate, tropical, and cold waters of different oceans. Notable installations include "Forests Underwater" and "ONE - The Sea as you've never felt it, " both celebrating oceanic beauty and connection with nature. The Oceanario is not just a spectacle; it actively promotes ocean education, research, and conservation efforts, collaborating with various institutions. Expert biologists and engineers ensure high-quality exhibitions and consulting services for aquariums worldwide.

The offer of reduced tickets (€7.50 instead of €25) during the month of September is of course going to attract lots of visitors, but the staff have done nothing to prevent overcrowding. There are two time slots, 5pm and 6pm. When we arrived early at 5:30, we asked where we would need to queue for the 6pm entry, and a member of staff said we could go straight in and the time slot didn’t matter. So there was no attempt to manage numbers. As a result, it was difficult to see many of the beautiful fish/animals without having to queue or being pushed up against lots of people. They need to keep to the time slots but also establish a capacity limit for the aquarium during September. It spoils the experience for everyone, especially for vulnerable people i.e. disabled, elderly, neurodivergent or those who suffer from claustrophobia/social anxiety.I never saw such colorful fish and I have been to a lot of aquariums. The sharks and all the display environments allowed the viewers to have wonderful views, thick plexiglass.

This place was a great place to see while in Lisbon. Especially if you have kids. They had different kinds of snails and seahorses (leafy seadragon!) I had never seen before. The sea otters and penguins were so cute and people love the big shark tank! Pineapple fish, snowflake moray, zebra Moray, ringed pipefish, and some weird razorfish were all unique to this aquarium I feel like. These I don’t believe I have seen in the aquarium’s in the states. If you are in Lisbon this is a must see!Who doesn’t love an aquarium, sea otters were favourites along with the sea dragon. Clean, amazing viewing of the big tank.
