Nature Walk - Bufa hill OR Santa Rosa Area
Overview
The term Tierra Adentro referred to the lands far from the coast that, because they were unknown to the Spaniards, were risky, while they were already known to the natives, especially in the north where these brave Chichimeca warriors were found. The silver and gold deposits were the incentive to enter the paths full of surprises and dangers; the unexpected always loomed beyond the undulations of the terrain that blocked the view….

I was spending a few days in Guanajuato and I realized how great this place was not only for urban/historical sightseeing, but also for hiking and adventures in the wild. So I contacted Cacomixtle to hire a local guide (consider that hiking trails in Mexico are usually not marked, so you'd better not go out and explore by yourself), and take me on a hiking tour to the highlands overlooking Guanajuato. They promptly replied to my request and the day after I was off for a scenic hike to Cerro de La Bufa with my guide, Don Antonio, who not only is an experienced mountain guide, but also knows a lot about the history, nature, and traditions of Guanajuato. The steep, about 5 km long hike we did took us to the Cueva de San Ignacio de Loyola, which every year on July 31st hosts a huge celebration dedicated to Saint Ignatius (the founder of the Jesuits, who played a key role in the history of the town) an reached its highest point in a panoramic spot situated nearly 400 m above the town, from which I had a breathtaking view of the surrounding valleys, as well as of some stunning rock formations like El Pastor and La Bufa. Thanks to Don Antonio I also learned a lot about the vegetation, as well as about the local traditions and the mining industry, which has traditionally played a key role in the history of Guanajuato (Don Antonio himself has a background in mining engineering). I highly recommend this tour to anybody who enjoys hiking and would like to combine the cultural experience in Guanajuato with some adventure in the wild. Cacomixtle is a great operator, Susanne (who manages it) always replied within few minutes to all my enquiries, and Don Antonio is a great, reliable and empathic guide, it felt very safe hiking with him and by the end of the hike it was like talking to a friend I had known for years. I don't know if I will have the opportunity to hit Guanajuato again in the future (it's the town I loved the most in my 3-week tour around Mexico), but in that case I would definitely contact Cacomixtle again to go and explore some more trails in the beautiful nature surrounding Guanajuato. Thank you so much guys for being amazing! I'll never forget the experience I had with you!Antonio picked us up in his SUV in the city of Guanajuato, and we were off for one of the most pleasant days of our trip. Antonio picked us up in his SUV in the city of Guanajuato, and we were off for one of the most pleasant days of our trip. We drove up to the town of Santa Rosa to being our hike. We walked through the streets of this quaint town to the trailhead. The well maintained trail goes through a beautiful oak forest. Along the way Antonio pointed out different plants and the history of the area. We spoke in Spanish, but he also speaks English. The trail went to a spectacular vista point of the valley. We were two women traveling and we always felt safe on the trip. Walking through the country side and the conversations we had with Antonio gave us a more complete experience of Guanajuato. I highly recommend this tour.Excelente guía, experiencia y lugar. I had a great tour with Susana in the Santa Rosa area -- I learnt so much about Guanajuato city and the hike we did I learnt all about the flora and fauna of the area. After the hike she was kind enough to extend the time and take me to a restaurant and ordered local delicacies that I would have otherwise never tried. It was a really lovely and memorable day and anyone that chooses to do this tour would also find it this way. I really really recommend this tour!!I thought it was a group tour, but it turned out to be a private tour. the guide Antonio didn't take me to Santa Rosa, but instead took a short drive to La Bufa south east of Guanajuato, which is the big cross on top of the mountain as advertised. I thought it was a group tour, but it turned out to be a private tour. the guide Antonio didn't take me to Santa Rosa, but instead took a short drive to La Bufa south east of Guanajuato, which is the big cross on top of the mountain as advertised. It was an adventurous hike taking 2 hours up & down, not for beginners and the unfit though. One feels acomplished having reached the cross and you have the entire Guanajuato under your feet. I really appreciate Antonio who is very experienced and I will be back.
