Stop At: Takayama, Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, Tokai, Chubu
Experience Edo-period Japan in the Takayama and in the UNESCO-listed Shirakawa-go village. You will have your lunch at your own expense in Takayama first, which is filled with interesting sights and is the gate-way to the Japanese Alps. Some of the must-see spots are the Sanmachi Suji District, which consists of three streets in the heart of Takayama Edo town, which lies just to the east of the Miya-gawa River. The streets are lined with traditional houses, shops, restaurants, sake breweries and cafes.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Shirakawago, 517 Hatogaya, Shirakawa-mura, Ono-gun 501-5629 Gifu Prefecture
Then you will head to the famous Shirakawa-go for the old gassho-zukuri (thached-roof) style houses that are spotted around this mountain village. Surrounded by rice paddies, you can hear the sounds of insects and birds if you listen. Located in a mountainous region that was cut off from the rest of the world for a long period of time, these villages with their Gassho-style houses subsisted on the cultivation of mulberry trees and the rearing of silkworms. The large houses with their steeply pitched thatched roofs are the only examples of their kind in Japan. Despite economic upheavals, the villages of Ogimachi, Ainokura, and Suganuma are outstanding examples of a traditional way of life perfectly adapted to the environment and people's social and economic circumstances.

I contacted the your to make sure that I can be dropped off of the tour at Takayama instead of returning to Nagoya. It was confirmed before I trip. But the itinerary was reversed and on the your day, the local tour guide told me that they are stopping at Takayama as the 1st part and not at the end of the tour before returning to Nagoya. So my plan was all messed up. Luckily, the Japan VIP tour allowed me to get a refund and dropped us at Takayama at the beginning of the tour. The local tour guide (Alan) made sure we got to our hotel at Takayama…Very kind of him!It was a fun way to explore the 2 places with bus, nice scenery along the way. It was a fun way to explore the 2 places with bus, nice scenery along the way. Shiragawago is tranquil, country lifestyles and serene, while Takayama is more commercial, a few walking streets with many sake tasting and F&B outlets. The Hida Beef lunch (optional) was very good. The bus was very clean and comfortable, the guide Miss Guo and the driver were both friendly and professional. Guide Miss Guo explained in details on the bus and we were on our own at the destination and able to get back to the bus on time. Overall is a good and valuable trip.We booked an English tour but was sent in a Chinese bus where nobody spoke English so it was a waste of our time, however the village was very nice
