Overview

A half hour fun boat ride through the mangroves takes you to Monkey River village where you head upriver into pristine rain forest. Expect to see crocodiles, huge iguanas on tree branches sunning themselves, turtles, and many species of tropical birds. Upriver, your licensed guide will lead you into the rain forest in search of howler monkeys. Nothing you read could prepare you for the adventure of hearing these monkeys for the first time...you just have to experience it! On this mellow hike, your guide will also point out the different plants and trees many of which are used as medicine by local bush doctors. As your hike through the jungle further from the river you may spot gibnuts (now known as royal rat since Queen Elizabeth dined on it), deer, ocelots, peccaries, tapirs, coatimundis and agoutis.

On the monkey river tour. Highlight was seeing the manatee on the way back. To be fair, it literally poured on us the whole time. It’s a hour boat ride to the river in a small boat with no rain cover and it rained hard the whole way there. Then in the jungle it rained hard and the boat ride back...

What a fun tour! My husband's favorite part might have been the boat ride out to Monkey River Village - but mine was the extensive amount of wildlife we were able to see. Our guide was born & raised in Monkey River Village, so he was very familiar with the area & local flora/fauna. We saw tons of...

We did this as an NCL tour and it was terrific. Saw lots of different birds along the river, as well as iguanas, crocodiles, Jesus Lizard. The hike into the jungle is quite short, about 20 mins or so but really worth it, saw howler monkeys, a huge tarantula 😱 and heard about the medicinal herbs ...

Ask for Will! He is easily one of the best guides we have ever had, anywhere. He grew up in Monkey River Village and is passionate about the area and its flora & fauna. We saw howler monkeys, manatees, a crocodile, lots of birds & turtles & iguanas.

Long trip to hear Howler Monkeys and little else. Restaurant excellent at Monkey River Village. Really don't care which plants good for treatment of different ailments because I am rarely in Belize. I would not spend the money.
