Stop At: Monkey River Town, Monkey River Town, Toledo District
Depart Placencia Village at 08:00 am for a boat ride along the coast zipping in an out of the mangroves. Stop in Monkey River Town to order lunch to be eaten on the return trip. You can expect to see crocodiles, huge iguanas on tree branches sunning themselves, turtles, and many species of tropical birds.
Upriver, your licensed guide will lead you into the rain forest in search of howler monkeys which communicate with each other to declare their territory. Nothing you read could prepare you for the adventure of hearing these monkeys for the first time...you just have to experience it!
Your guide will also point out the different plants and trees many of which are used as medicine by local bush doctors. You may spot gibnuts (now known as royal rat since Queen Elizabeth dined on it), deer, ocelots, peccaries, tapirs, coatimundis and agoutis. abundant wildlife.

On the monkey river tour. Highlight was seeing the manatee on the way back. To be fair, it literally poured on us the whole time. It’s a hour boat ride to the river in a small boat with no rain cover and it rained hard the whole way there. Then in the jungle it rained hard and the boat ride back...

It’s a hour boat ride to the river in a small boat with no rain cover and it rained hard the whole way there. Then in the jungle it rained hard and the boat ride back to the restaurant was the hardest rain of the day. On the way back to Placencia the sun came out and dried us off a bit and we got to see a manatee. I’d skip this tour and see what it would cost to take a boat out to see manatees. What a fun tour! My husband's favorite part might have been the boat ride out to Monkey River Village - but mine was the extensive amount of wildlife we were able to see. Our guide was born & raised in Monkey River Village, so he was very familiar with the area & local flora/fauna. We saw tons of birds, a crocodile, a boa, lots of bats, iguanas, howler monkeys, jesus lizards, turtles.......the list goes on! Really enjoyed the boat ride down the river - it kind of takes a different pace depending on what wildlife there is around. The jungle hike was nice as well. Nothing too steep or challenging - it was more like a mellow walk through the jungle. ProTip: Put on more bugspray than you need, and apply it on top of your clothes. Don't be like me and only apply it to exposed skin (I ended up with about 40 bites where the mosquitoes got me through my clothes). One last thing - the lunch at Alice's Restaurant was FANTASTIC. In our two week trip around Belize, that meal definitely ranks in our top 5!We have done a number of these tours and they are slow going so you can enjoy the wildlife and surrounds but if you don't have a good guide to find you things and know enough about them to help you experience it it's not the same. Saw lots of different birds along the river, as well as iguanas, crocodiles, Jesus Lizard. The hike into the jungle is quite short, about 20 mins or so but really worth it, saw howler monkeys, a huge tarantula 😱 and heard about the medicinal herbs ...

He is easily one of the best guides we have ever had, anywhere. He grew up in Monkey River Village and is passionate about the area and its flora & fauna. Really don't care which plants good for treatment of different ailments because I am rarely in Belize. I would not spend the money.
