Meteora Sunset Tour from Kalambaka

This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Meteora, Kastraki, Kalambaka 422 00 Greece

Meteora is an area that covers few square kilometers, where an ancient monastic community and a rare geological phenomenon of huge rock pillars coexist in absolute harmony. Located at the northwest tip of the plain of Thessaly, Meteora today has become one of the most popular destinations of mainland Greece. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an archeological site and an officially declared holy place! At the foothills of the rocks, there are 2 settlements, the town of Kalabaka and the village of Kastraki.

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Byzantine Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, Kalambaka Greece

It is a must-see church, not only for its age and precious 11th century Byzantine frescoes, but also because of the construction material of its walls. Relics of an ancient Greek temple dedicated to God Apollo have been embedded in the wall. In its interior one can also pay attention to the older mosaic floor that is revealed in specific spots beneath the current floor. This is definitely one of the most precious early Christian basilicas around Greece and even now days serves as an active church for the locals.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Agios Stefanos, Kalambaka Greece

This is the most accessible monastery, where instead of steps you simply cross a small bridge to reach the entrance. It is ideal for visitors who cannot use the steps and yet they wish to have a real experience of a Meteora monastery.

The beginning of monastic life on the rock of Agios Stephanos dates back to early in the 12th century. Hosios Antonios, in the first half of the 15th century, and Hosios Philotheos, who renovated or rather rebuilt from its foundations the old small and elegant Catholicon, the present church of Agios Stephanos, in 1545 are mentioned as its founders.

Duration: 30 minutes

Pass By: Great Meteoron Monastery, Kalambaka 42200 Greece

The Great Meteoron Monastery is the biggest and oldest one of all. It was called the monastery that was “suspended in the air” (meteoro), because of the formation of the gigantic rock on top of which it was built.

The Great Meteoro Monastery was founded by Saint Athanasios the Meteorite who was the first founder of the monastery and the organizer of the systematic koenovion. For this reason, the foundation of this monastery is considered to be a turning point, or even better, the beginning of the organized monastisicm in Holy Meteora.

Pass By: Holy Trinity Monastery (Agia Triada), Kalambaka Greece

Pass By: Roussanou Monastery, Kalambaka Greece

The Holy Monastery of Roussanou has received the name of the first probable hermit who settled on the rock. The main cathedral was founded at the end of the 16th century and was decorated thirty years later.

Compared to other rocks where monasteries were built, the one of Roussanou has a lower elevation, which makes it more accessible. The monastery was initially founded by monks and it suffered severe damage during World War II. It became a convent in 1988.

Pass By: Varlaam Monastery, Kalambaka Greece

The Holy Monastery of Varlaam is the second biggest monastery. It is located opposite of the Great Meteoro Monastery and it was founded in the mid 14th century by the exercitant Hosios Varlaam.

The elegant monastery Catholicon was built in the honour of Agioi Pantes in 1541-42, by two brothers from Ioannina, the priest-monks Hosioi Theophanes and Nectarios the Apsarades. The main church was decorated in 1548. Based on stylistic criteria, this magnificent wall-painting is attributed to the famous hagiographer from Thebes, Frago Catelano.

Visiting the monasteries of Meteora have been a dream for a while and this sunset tour was the perfect introduction. The guide, Vasilys and driver Yourgos...I am so sorry because I know I've botched those spellings. Were so informative, friendly and kind. They were very thoughtful of the group's need for photos and orovided multiple stops. We were able to enter St. Stephens and ended with a great viewpoint for the sunset.

Excellent tour of Meteora and the temple in Kalambaka! We thoroughly enjoyed it and even the boys had fun. The guide Vaggelis was very knowledgeable, passionate and ready to answer all our questions. We recommend this tour to anyone who would like to know more about the area, whether Greek or foreigner. Thank you for an enjoyable tour!

Our driver and tour guide were excellent! While the weather did not cooperate for a sunset, the information provided to us and the locations we visited were wonderful. It was nice to have a small group and to be picked up at our hotel.

We saw the Monasteries in a new light. Getting to several areas that maybe you would have overlooked. Having locals show you around makes all of the difference. We were taken to a number of different areas. What a backdrop. An unusual landscape. The weather was pretty good as well, some clouds.

This is an amazing site and a fantastic tour. The Meteora monasteries are breathtaking, but the expertly guided tour adds several more levels which transformed our experience and appreciation of the site. The guide was vastly knowledgeable about history, religion and culture and answered all of our questions thoroughly. The visit to the byzantine church was also very informative and enlightening for us. There was time for only a single monastery but we visited another one on the next morning and it was enough for us.
The bus picked us from the hotel right on time, and was very clean and comfortable.

Highly recommended!! If you've come all this way to see Meteora, do yourself a favor and enjoy it to the fullest with a tour.

This tour was amazing!

We had the most amazing time on this sunset tour! We were so worried because it had been raining earlier in the day but the skies cleared and we saw the most beautiful sunset! The tour guides were awesome and visiting the monasteries were great. Our only regret was that we didn't spend more time in this beautiful area during our vacation in Greece!

Recommend the panoramic and monastary tour in morning and definately take this tour to really get an excellent overview of the area and its history. Our guide Jim really made this tour special. His extensive knowledge of the history of the area, especially when he gave us a personal in depth tour of the byzantine church in Kalambaka, really helped everone apptrciate the rich history of the Meteori region. Jim also offerred to take everyone's picture in his own fun way and answered everyone's questions.

If you have extra time in Greece, go to Meteora....It's a special place. Arrange a tour of your choice with Viator and spend a night there. Don't try to do a visit in one will be too exhausting. It takes 5 hours to get there from Athens, both ways, either by train or bus. Train feels like it takes forever....bus is more pleasant with a 20 minute stop to get off bus and unwind with food and/or drink.
We did sunset tour which was very good and well organized. Tour guide spoke English and was very informative. At the end of tour you'll be ready to relax with dinner and/or drinks at center of town. I would book again with Viator for other vacation tours.
P.S. If Greece wishes to have tourists visit Meteora, I strongly suggest a faster way to get there and return from Athens.

Our tour was informative and entertaining! Our guide grew up in the area and had personal anecdotes as well as an in depth knowledge of the sites we visited. He was also able to recommend further activities for the remainder of our stay. The driver was friendly as well, offering to take photos. The van was comfortable and our pick up and drop off were timed perfectly, making this a no-hassle excursion. The sunset was gorgeous although not exactly what we expected as the skies weren't perfectly clear. This trip was a perfect introduction to the area.

There are few places in the world quite as beautiful as Meteora. Not only is it a wonderful place, but the people are friendly and happy and there is a strangeness that makes it all so much more interesting than most places. For this tour, the guide was great! We were picked up at our hotel in a very nice van. Both the driver and the guide were excited and enthusiastic. They were happy to answer questions and took us to so many beautiful places I almost got burnt out on gorgeous vistas. There is no way not to do this tour if you make it up here. It was fabulous!

Excellent service! Guide and driver picked me up at the train station and even stopped on the way so I could get a take out lunch. Very friendly and informative guide and the bus was comfortable. You will probably want to stay in the area and spend an extra day so you can walk some of the Meteora trails.

We arrived by train on a Sunday and used this excursion as our first introduction to the monasteries. So glad we opted for this tour. To see the monasteries you should be prepared to walk up and down steps. Great driver and guide. Excellent tour.

We did both the morning tour and this late afternoon one. They were both terrific. The guides were excellent and the places that we went to were all interesting. We saw things we would not have seen doing it on our own. The group size was nice small and the amount of time spent at each place was just right.

Was an excellent tour which we both thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend for all who visit the Meteoras. The coach was comfortable and the driver and tour guide excellent. They made sure we got to see the most important sites and got us to the best viewing spot on time for the sunset. Will always cherish these memories. Thank you.

A beautiful place, amazing architecture and the geology of Meteora was breathtaking. Our guide was very knowledgeable and provided a good background on the iconography and the monasteries. The sunset was amazing!

Great way to experience the sunset.

Absolutely wear comfortable shoes! Going up so many flights of stairs gets tiring, and the monasteries are very small so we didn't have to spend too much time in them. The views of the mountains were amazing! The sunset was okay, it wasn't what I was expecting in my head, but it's okay.
