Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee making Cultural Tour | BURIGI CHATO SAFARIS LTD
Overview
This very impressive Waterfall is one of the tallest in the area, spewing crystal clear glacier water 70m into its basin. The beautiful path leading to Materuni Waterfall is located 2500m above sea level
It traverses through valleys and hills covered by tropical rainforest, past coffee, banana and avocado farms. On a clear day great views of Kibo and Moshi town can be seen. The hike to the base of the Waterfall can be demanding and hiking boots are recommended. Try your own hand at processing, roasting and preparing a fresh cup of coffee in the local Chagga way.Once you have finished enjoying your coffee break, you will depart on a beautiful 45 minute hike through the hills and valleys en route to the waterfalls. Along the way your guide will teach you about local plants and how they are used for food and traditional medicine, as well as giving you more insight into the local Chagga culture. Materuni village feels like a resort with lush green vegetation and small traditionally made villas. The waterfalls are a short hike down from the village. It is high and actually one of the highest and beautiful in Tanzania. The water was warm that day. You can bring your swim suit when you want to be in this place and enjoy it better. After swimming we went to a small farm belonging to a local family. This was another colorful part of the trip. The guide was helpful to ensure we understand the whole process of brewing coffee. The farm owner was at this stage our teacher. We got to see and participate with music and drums. Coffee was made with incredible process from been green beans to been roasted coffee all in traditional local capacity with almost zero technology used. The water falls was very fresh and cold. Our local guide from Burigi Chato Safaris recommended we do this activity after the hike from Kilimanjaro. I visited the water falls as the managing director organized the whole visit. The guide met us at our hotel. We drove to the starting point by the office vehicle. Our transport was offered by the company at 40 usd which was worth it provided the distance. At the water falls we stopped to take photos. Then we ate a little bit of snack and food! After meals and a little bit of survey around the water falls we went to the coffee farm that belonged to a local villager. We were shown the process of making coffee from the tree to the cup. It fun and interesting because of the songs and dances that were presented by the hosting family.
