Great experience all around! The company was very professional and responsive from my initial booking inquiry through the conclusion of the safari. At first I was a little anxious about corresponding with Robert by email and sending a deposit sight unseen, but it became apparent to me that this is an established and well-run company. Our guide, John Kariuki was top notch. John had more than two decades of experience as a guide, and has been with Explorer Kenya for 13 years. He effortlessly navigated the game trails and rough terrain in each of the national parks we visited, was a safe and professional driver, had a keen sense of where to find rare animals, and was very knowledgeable about the animals and the parks. John led us to some very rare animals, including cheetah cubs and a leopard cub. John was also very patient and gracious with our young (and sometimes squabbling) children. A really memorable trip for the whole family! We went on an extraordinary trip with Explorer Kenya. We went on an extraordinary trip with Explorer Kenya. We decided on a private safari for our honeymoon and we added on an additional day in the Masaai Mara, where we went on a hot air balloon and saw the animals at sunrise from above. The hot air balloon ride was definitely a highlight of our trip, but the trip altogether was an asolutely amazing experience made seamless by our guide and driver, Mike. Mike is the man. He really took care of us for the full 8 days, and was always very prompt and professional. I really appreciated how he gave us options with the schedule, like when to start and stop the days, and he made sure I was truly fine with the options we went with. A private safari is the way to go. We learned so much from him about Kenya and of all the wildlife we saw. We wouldn't have been able to spot anywhere as many animals without him. We saw all of the big 5 during the course of the week! At one point, we saw a pair of cheetah brothers take down a baby tobi and a baby gazelle. There were hyenas waiting on a male lion to finish his dinner to get the leftovers. We loved being in the wild. All the places we stayed had something unique to offer. We stayed at Mara Eden, which was on the Mara River, and that had hippos lined up on the water and the service there was excellent. At Lake Nakuru, we spotted a lion from afar at the lodge and the view of the lake was gorgeous. Lake Naivasha didn't have predators, so there were zebra and wildbuck just roaming about the gardens. My favorite was Kibo Safari Camp in Ambelosi, where the grounds were so beautiful and they welcomed us each time we came through the door with warm towels. From Amboseli, we decided we wanted to go to Mombasa instead of returning to Nairobi first. Mike called the office to book our train tickets and made sure the hotel provided us with breakfast in time to leave (which he did several different times when we had early morning starts). He waited until we were fully checked in at the train station before we said our goodbyes. We are so grateful to have had him as our guide and will miss our new friend. This was an extraordinary experience for the animals and scenery alone, but it wouldn’t have been half as good without our senior expert guide/driver, John Kariuki. This was an extraordinary experience for the animals and scenery alone, but it wouldn’t have been half as good without our senior expert guide/driver, John Kariuki. With over two decades of experience, he seemed to know everyone we met, got inside tips from park rangers, has eagle-eyes for spotting animals, but is also an expert on animal facts and their behavior. He answered every question we could think of, from specific animal facts, to Kenyan life in general. An excellent and safe driver (no small feat here on these Kenyan roads) and very patient and sweet with our children. The 7 day tour was the perfect length. It’s an assertive pace, always on the go and lots of early mornings, but worth it to maximize what you see. Opt to stay in lodges (Ol Tukai, especially). Having meals and transportation all included took a lot of potential stress away and allowed us to very much enjoy the ride. I appreciated that Explorer Kenya offered very clear communication all along the way and didn’t try to upsell or over-commercialize the experience. Highly recommend this company, and John in particular, from start to finish.I highly recommend Explorer Kenya!
