I did a 4-day kayaking trip in the San Juan Islands and had a great time! Our guides were terrific and made sure that we had everything we needed, including helpful information about how to kayak effectively. The meals were delicious, and the equipment provided was all in great condition. Our tour took us over more open water than I expected, and it was a lot of work. Paddling 12 miles the first day is a clue that folks who sign up for this should be in reasonably good shape and have enough upper-body endurance to keep paddling for hours - but the rewards of the effort are definitely worth it. Being able to experience the beautiful islands - including land and sea wildlife (yes, we saw Orcas!) is incredible, and I thank Outdoor Odysseys and guides Kevin and Ben (as well as a great group of paddlers) for making it possible. The trip itself was great -- the guides Justin and Sam were very organized and friendly. The trip itself was great -- the guides Justin and Sam were very organized and friendly. I was traveling solo and the group felt like a family. I loved seeing the otters and seals while kayaking, and deer came to our campsites. The only improvements that I would suggest is actually the advice given for travel to the pick up point in Friday Harbor. Potential travelers need to know the logistics of getting there can be complex. They suggest using an airport shuttle service from Seattle Tacoma Airport to Anacortes, then a ferry to Friday Harbor, but the schedules do not mesh well, and the airport shuttle did not go the entire distance. There were just so many holes that I was forced to rent a car for the entire time which had to be parked at a fee. I used the Ships Harbor Inn parking at $7/day about .5 mile away from the terminal. It would have been $13 at the ferry terminal parking. My fellow guests also had difficulty figuring out the logistics and like me, spent many hours trying to coordinate shuttle and ferry schedules. It was an amazing experience. My spouse and I showed up at the pickup point with our sleeping bags and packs and everything else was taken care of by our wonderful guide Laura. It was an amazing experience. My spouse and I showed up at the pickup point with our sleeping bags and packs and everything else was taken care of by our wonderful guide Laura. We just had to get in the boat and paddle, at most 1.5 to 2 hours in a stretch and then have her prepare a great meal, seeing the sights along the way to and from Stuart Island. Also appreciate Laura's knowledge on the environment and the area's history. Would highly recommend for those wanting to get away and be unplugged from their phones and emails, time just to focus on paddling and sightseeing. We would recommend taking the 1/2 day opportunity to hike over to the Turn Point Light Station on Stuart Island. It was also great to go in early September when the weather was a bit cooler and skies overcast for time on the water. My boyfriend and I decided to do a tour with Outdoor Odyssey while on the island in mid-September (2021) and we had an amazing time with our guide Ben. My boyfriend and I decided to do a tour with Outdoor Odyssey while on the island in mid-September (2021) and we had an amazing time with our guide Ben. We are usually on the other end of the guiding experience - doing the work, not being the client! We really enjoyed the experience and Ben made us feel comfortable, took the time to answer our many questions, and never made us feel rushed or like we had to hurry back. His knowledge of the area - social, environmental, and technical (when it concerns the kayaking, currents and weather patterns) was obvious and made it a truly interesting and relaxing trip for us. We don't usually spend money on these types of guided adventures AND we are so glad we decided to do it! We did feel like an overnight trip would have been worth it since you don't always get to go too far on a day-trip, so I'd keep that in mind for next time... We also recognize that we lucked out and saw whales the day before AND after our sea kayaking trip, but not while we were on the water and this is totally NORMAL. Make sure you want to get on the water for the experience of boating and not just whale sightings. Regardless -- It was a great adventure!AMAZING! We had a large group with 2 guides for 3 days.
