- Depart from the airport to the whale watching area just off the coast to see Kaikoura's whales from above.

The view from the plane was fantastic. We saw a pod of 100+ dusky dolphins playing, jumping and spinning through the water. It was awesome. Next we saw a few Orcas lazing around on top of the water. The pilot gave an excellent commentary as we flew around the area. Also found out Orcas are not "killer whales" but a large dolphin. Very good, highly recommend.I like that we are supporting an interest group. The team was very hospitable and tried their best to take up on our flight despite the poor weather. We waited for a pocket of opportunity and launched the moment the weather improved. Saw a Blue and a Fin whale. Amazing!

Great views of the mountains and coastline of Kaikoura area. Viewing of whale(s) is hyped a bit. Yes, you will probably see a whale and to see the whole creature from above is more exciting than a tail, spout or back from a boat, but to get any kind of photo of the event takes a lot of work. Everyone sits by a window (maybe avoid being under the wings), so everyone gets a good view, but twisting and turning the plane so everyone on both sides gets their views can be a little nauseating, after 20-30 minutes. If you have motion sickness problems, take a pill before hand. The plane is small so bounces somewhat and you are a respectable height above the water (safety and rules), so zooming in for photos is difficult. Take constant photos and lots so you can get some good ones out of the batch. I would still recommend the activity for the opportunity.Super friendly staff welcome us warmly. Once we were underway our pilot pointed out sights of interest on the coast, we saw a Sperm Whale and a huge pod of dolphins. Breathtaking! Best way to see the whale, as you saw the whole body! Plus, the views of the coastline and the ocean are worth the very reasonable price by themselves. Myself and a friend did the 11am whale watching flight on Sunday and loved every minute of it! It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and I would recommend it to anyone. We were let down by Whale Watch Kaikoura as they cancelled the boat trip that we had booked and paid for. We then came across Air Kaikoura and they managed to get us on a flight the next day for CHEAPER than we had paid for the boat trip! The check-in process was smooth, we were kept up to date about a slight delay to the trip to ensure best timing for the whales, the pilot was very good - knowledgable, calm and keen to ensure that all 7 of us passengers had a comfortable trip with the best views. This experience is worth the money and some more. I would highly, highly recommend it.
