How to make handmade Tuscan Ceramic: a course with a master potter in Montelupo
Overview
In my family business we make Tuscan pottery since generations, and after achieving the Certificate of Excellence from Tripadvisor we decided to open our knowledge to everyone that is curious to discover that very ancient tradition and wants to learn its secrets.
In a full immersive two/three hours class we will experience together all the process in ceramic making.
Our shop in town is like our house, it is open since twenty years and it will be a pleasure to share our passion with you.
The factory is a bit outside the city (in case I will bring you there with my car) and is where we make the magic, and you will see how many hands handle one single ceramic from a piece of clay to a decorated majolica.
Then I won't say more, it's a full-immersive experience that you have to feel with your eyes, your hands and your heart.
Inclusions
- Raw clay, working clothes and ceramic wheel
- Small-group tour in factory
- Transport by private vehicle
- Double firing and glazing
- Shipment - the pieces you will make will be shipped to your house!
What to expect
The experience is made to show you what means living like a ceramist, in a countryside town outside Florence.
I will be happy to show you all the process in the factory and and then we will come back to the shop and you will make a piece by your hands!

This was an incredible experience that far exceeded our expectations! Upon arrival at the store, my husband and I had the opportunity meet Matteo and his mom, who were incredibly welcoming. Matteo then took us to the factory where he gave us a private tour allowing us to see how a piece of pottery is made from start (a clump of clay) to finish (a masterpiece). Then we viewed their sample room where we were blown away at all the beautiful pieces they've made over time. We have a whole new respect for handmade pottery...the work they do is nothing short of amazing! After the tour, we came back to the shop where we met Matteo's dad, the master potter, who helped us both make a piece of pottery. If you are in the Tuscan region, we highly recommend this tour. Having no real-life experience with this ancient artform, we found this to be one of the most fun, informative, and engaging Italy tours we've ever been on - and this was our 4th visit to Italy. We cannot wait to receive our pieces! Thank you, Matteo and family.Friendly people and a good place Nice and perfect experience Special thanks for mateo and his family

We will absolutely return on future trips! What a superb experience we had with Matteo and his family. This was a lovely outing - much more than we bargained for. We got to visit the factory, see how everything was made, then we had great fun making bowls with Matteo's dad - a real master craftsman. Highly recommend this for all the family.

What a fun and unique experience! Truly the highlight of our Italy trip. The store was very easy to get to by train from Florence. Matteo and his family were so warm and welcoming, this was the small town experience I was hoping to find in Italy! We were given a tour of the factory and were in awe of the craftsmanship. We also got to each throw a bowl and now we each have keepsakes that will remind us of our time here. Matteo gave us the recommendation for a local gelato shop that will forever be the best gelato I've ever had, a must visit after the tour.Certainly a huge highlight of my two month stay in Italy was the warmth of Matteo and his talented master potter father and lovely mother. Such a privilege to visit the factory to see the amazing skills of the artisans. Making a pot was loads of fun! Grazie mille!
