At Skjaldarvik we offer riding tours where people get a chance to learn about the Icelandic horse under expert supervision.
Go horseback riding on the sturdy and friendly Icelandic horse in the beautiful nature of North Iceland. This adventure is the ideal choice for horse lovers, families and groups wanting to experience the Icelandic landscape on horseback, just as the Icelandic people have done since the Age of Settlement. You will be on the actual tour, riding the horse for 1 full hour. We do not count the time getting prepared, helmets, and safety talk as part of the actual tour time, so you will have lots of time to enjoy riding around on the horses!

We really enjoyed the horseback riding and being able to book the night before and luckily get in. We were treated as friends right away. The horses were sweet, very healthy, and we were able to feed them and hang out as much as we wanted to with them after the ride. My husband and i enjoyed the coffee, brownies and offer of the hot tub after the ride as well. The staff is very kind, The ride itself is picturesque, with views of the fjord and the staff very knowledgeable and easy to talk to about Icelandic horses. It is the usual head to tail riding, but we got to experience another one of the 5 Icelandic gates, which was faster and was fun. We went on a 1 hour ride on a really cold day end of september. Beforehand we had told the receptionist that we are experienced riders and the horses they picked for us where a perfect match. Very friendly, very good gaits, very spirited. Our guide was Elisa and the ride she took us on was perfect and was actually much longer than the booked hour. She took us through wood and along the fjord with a lot of tölt and galopp. She was exceptionally friendly and perfect company. After coming back and rewarding the horses we were invited to have coffee and cake in the guesthouse. An exceptionally good place to go if you are experienced riders, an absulute must- go- to place in Akureyri.Our experience here was excellent. Once we were briefed and given our equipment we went out for an incredible ride. Our horses (August and Donut (sp.)), were friendly and very well behaved. Taking them down to the water to cool their feet was amazing. Horseback riding in the Icelandic waters - once in a lifetime. I would absolutely recommend this trip to everyone. We miss the horses very much.As someone who rides horses, this was obviously a such a cool experience for me…but even my husband who isn’t much into horseback riding had a blast! As someone who rides horses, this was obviously a such a cool experience for me…but even my husband who isn’t much into horseback riding had a blast! The space for the horses was nice, our tour guide was so friendly and we chatted the whole time about all things Iceland! Such a fun and different way to view all of Iceland’s beauty. After our ride we were able to go inside and warm up with tea, coffee, or hot chocolate and some desserts as well-just what needed after a cold day of riding! I would very much recommend horseback riding on these gentle giants with this tour company!I had a great time. Very nice guide and a very nice horse.
